A Rascally Practice. It is said that unprincipled parties fishing in some of the lakes in the eastern part of this county have been using ‘“‘cocculus indicus,’’ vulgarly _ known as the “fish berry.’’ This fisherman’s gid is a large seed. It grows in the. Bast Indian Islands, and has been used by the natives in capturing ’ fish for many years. The seed is a narcotic, and when the fish eats it, it renders them crazy at first, and then stupifies them. The seed is concealed in dough, and the greedy fish suspect nothing. When the fish are. in the crazy stagethey jump out of the water} or float at the top, and are readily j captured. Some authorities claim that the “‘fish-berry”’ is extremely poisonous, but fisherman who have used it many tinves say it does not render the flesh of the finny ones unwholesome It is against the law to use cocculus indicus, but this does not prevent unprincipled people from frequently using it. Signor Mercenario isa high official in the Mexican Government and stands close to President Diaz. Like Spaniards of nobility, he is accomplished and éxceedingly polite and affable in every manner. He is making tais trip in his own interest principally, and incidentally forthe berefit of a circle of financial friends. He is working silver mines and the richest qnicksilver mines in Mexico, situated 120 ‘niles in the interior from Acapulco. He is reducin; his ore by the old style called the patio precess, which takes from 12 i 15 days to separate the metal from thé rock. His mine is 9¢0 feet de p,--being the deepest in that section, thongh there are a number of other mines from 40 to 30) feet deep. The r0ch is taken out by hand in rawhide sacks. The object of S'gnor Mercenario’s visit 1s to study the American method of 1edncing ores, und‘he will take witl, him from San Francisco everything necessary for a 20-stamp mill. If the natives permit him to continue its existence he will enlarge it to meet the femands of his mining interests. He is absolutely full of life and push, and is more than pleased with the Cabfornis and Nevada style of reducring ores; where the silver can be sep: trated from the rock in five hours, -irstead of 12 or 15 days’ by the patio proces-.
