MORE WAR TALK.
The Oroville Mercury discusses
at length the hydraulic mining
question—insisting that debrir
can be restrained and the work
goon. Butthe discussion of thir
question is over. Judges Sawyer
and Deady settled that. The live
question is now, ‘‘‘how can the injunctions against hydraulic mining be enforced?’ It the laws cannot be enforced, then the Valley
people will be forced to.submit o1
resort to violence—Marysville Appeal.
The Appeal’s wild talk is nothing more than sheet-iron_thunder.
The miners laugh at it, and weli
they can afford to. The ¢ourt:
have told them all they need do t
resume mining is to restrain the
debris. They are prepared to
fight itout on this issue, and on
this issue they are sure to win.
As long as they keep the: law on
their side, all the “violénde’’ that
the anti-miners can invoke is not
powerful enough to check them
fora day. Somebody may get
hurt ifthe cranks in the valley
have the hardihood to do anything worse than stay at home
ae and scold and threaten, but the
miners will not be the sufferers for they know their rights and
can defend them.
The Appeal has finally recovered from the scare it received whew
Mr. Beatty of Smartsville introduced in the Yuba County Board
ofSupervisors a resolution caleulated to expose what had been
done with the immense suins of
the people’s money which the
Board pretends to have expended
in tke legitimate prosecution o
the miners; and after severa
aod weeks spent in getting itself to
gether after having recovered
from the effects of the ‘‘bombshell,’’ lectures us in severe language for upholding the principle
that the minority should rule.
This paper having advanced no
such doctrine as right, and its
language to the contrary having
been plain, our contemporary
stands convicted of. being very .
economical with the truth, The
point we did make, and which we
. Still stick to, is that the anti-minwing ring, although paying but a
small portion of the taxes, are
shrewder politicians than
neighbors, and thus were able to
secure three out of five members
ofthe Board as their allies; but
that-such political success on — the
part of the anti-miners does not
properly carry with-it the privilege to trample upon the rights. of
_the-majority-of-the citizens of the
county who got “‘left’’ at the polls.
Might does not always make
right, and if the majority of the
Supervisors who. represent the
minority of the tax-payers of Yu
ba county have not done anything
wrong or extravagant, why is it
they hide away from an investigation? That’s what we would like to
know, and the Appeat will find it
a delicate question to deal with.
MEMORIAL DAY.
California is one of. the States
which have declared the thirtieth
i day of May to be a legal holiday.
‘ 4 It had become a holiday in fact
4 before it was proclaimed as such
" more generally respected bythe
people. The custom, originally
confined to. decorating with flora:
offerings the grayes of those who
served in the Rébellion, but which
has gradually grown more and
more-comprehensive until now we
beautify the last resting places 0:
~ all, is most beautiful in conception,
4 and touches a chord in the breasts
ij of patriotic citizens which will reviverich memories and recall experiences that have been passed
oe, _With happy_results to the. country
for which so many offered their
lives as a Sacrifice, The heat and
anger of battle have long since
subsided; the acrimonies of the
years of reconstruction have caased
and there is greater harmony
among the people of all the sec_ tions than has existed at any
previous time during the life of
the present generation. The
armies of the Union met with foa-men worthy of their steel, and
their pwn bravery is measured by
the valor of the armies they at
last overcame. It is fitting that
on this anniversary .victor and
* vanquished, and all their countrythe memories of those who died in
contesting an issue that has been
settled forever. :
Of the day, sofraught with solemn
memories, is especially calculated
toimpress upon us and those who
will succeed us on life’s stage, a
deeper sense of the lasting obligation we owe to the men who
Paaht the good fight, and of the
inestimable vAlue.of the victories
they won.
