LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
THE ILiLrNors AND Wisconsty.—On
‘the ist of February last, W.D. Smith
and eleven other persons took a. con-.
-—-—tract to work the Illinois and Wisconsin mine at Grass Valley, and they have
‘been 80 successful in taking out gold
that they yesterday bought ‘threeeighths of the entire mine, During
the last two months they took ont $11,000 in gold. This is the third. time Mr.
Smith has been an owner in this claim,
having made money in buying and selling each time prior to the last, and he
is satisfied that he has got enough 7
sight to make money this time. By
~ the terms of the contract alluded to
above, the parties were entitled to fourfifths of the proceeds of the mine, which
they worked in ‘theirown way, using
‘the machinery of the company. It
turns out to be.a big thing.

his sermon complimented the Catholics
on the zeal with which they performed
their religious duties. He’ said “wherever devout and willing workers were
found, whether among Catholics, Baptists, Congregationalists, Methodists or
other denominations, they were God’s
people if honest in their belief.” Such
sentiments as these are worthy of Christians, and we love to hear them coming
from the followers of Him who was.no

the guilt or innocence of the defendant.
This case’ is important as it involves
the question of the applicability of the
Civil Rights Law to this State. The
< question will be argued in the County
