The Grass Valley Union, speaking of our article headed “Willa Railroad Pay,” says: “Our neighbor of the Ne ~vada TRANSCRIPT proves conclusively, in ite yesterday’s issue, that a railroad would pay, if i¢ were ran into this county as far ae Nevada City, through Grass Valley. We: have wever had a doubt on that pr guageof a distinguish raiiread man of England, we believe that no country ‘is too poor to have a»railroad; we bebeliéve further, that there is no country but will grow richer by having railroads through it. Why then do not our people move. in such matters? We have a community, taking the two towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley, which is wealthy enough to build sixwant enterprise ? We think they have that, since the immense works in canals for mining purposes have been constructed in this county ander the most disadvantageous circumstances. These canals cross great canyons, are put through recky ridges and are hung on the faces of precipices. They cost immense sums of money, and have proved ‘to be profitable. A railroad which presents much fewer difficulties in the way of engineering, and whic is bound to be profitable, with honest management, can. find no. bailders among us. Have the gia in: enter prise left our dpe agp softer real estate business of Ahe cities around salt water? {t would seem that they After speaking of the investments by sts abroad, and showing the t of savings banks, in drawing iway the earnings of men of small means, the Union truthfully says: “We must have, therefore, more of a stay-athome,money, and less of the hurry of sending off our coin, if we wish to build up oar county. There is no more difficulty about the permanent value ot home securities for money loaning purposes than there is about the permanency of San Francisco securities. San Franciaco is to be « large: city, and ‘we hope it’ will reach the full measure . Of ite ambition at a very early day ; but before it can bea very large place, it must have a great and well developed country around it. That great development must seach even the foot hills, before the city will feel the full effect of the stimulus of country development. ‘We consider it entirely safe, then, to purposes, Indeed, unless this is done, those who have already made for themselves non-portable property here, will see their wealth steadily decline, ¢ Tue Roppers CavGnt.—Meney will tell and the prompt offer of rewards by Wells, Fargo & Co. and the Railway Company hae already secured the arrest of the villains engaged in the first rob bery of the Central, Pacific railroad train, Squade-of cavalry and scouting parties ate scouring the plaingin the vicinity of the second robbery, and wi ave no doubt the Toano robbers will Iso be caught. A Superscription. . ; i, A letter received at the Post Office in this city, a day oF two since, is directed to “The Mayer of Nevada City, San Francisco, California.” It comes in one of the handsomely lithographed envelopes of “The Southern Hotel,St. Louis,” and is probably from a sojourner in that locality. He left a valise full of c'othes and «' memorandum book which stated that he was tired of life. He was an Irishman, and’35 years of age. Superiatendent Towne has received dispatches announcing the capture of two more of the men engaged in the second railroad robbery, who were brought to Salt Lake Thursday. They were caught ia the mountains seventy~ five miles soath of that city. A cavalry force is in het pursuit of the balance, A later dispatch says that Capt. 8. J, Green, Jimmy Eddington and Judge Plunkett, had just arrived at Reno with one of the robbers and over $11,-. 000 of the stolen treasure. Tharsday morning the ceiling of one of the Central Pacific cars caught fire from an overheated. stove as the train ‘was leaving San Francisco. Very lit tle damage was done, It ig reported that there is a defalcation of from $50,000 to, $200,000 in the accounts of the superintendent of a leading Comstock mine, a charge of disposing of his property to defraud his creditors, the complainant being a Chinaman, and held to vail in the sum of $2,000, * A walking match is to take place between Mies Emma ‘Forresteller and Mary Chepman, Two men who were arrested on the western bound train, Simpson's Station were released, as they proved to be honest miners. A 8HorT time ago, a gentleman whose monetary interests in the Stock Exshould receive consequent on the war, +waited an important telegram in Wall street, which was to him the success or therwise of a very hazardous speculation he had made. The state of his uervous excitement was .su excessive during the time he waited, that when che telegram arrived anpouncing. the safety of his venture, the reaction was se great that he went raving mad. Gilchrist thanaged to aliay their suspicions, and shortly after James Burke, of Truckee, came up. A correspondent of the Union gives the following details of citizens, returning with .others from a hunting excursion in, Sierra, valley, . called for dinner at Parson’s. While dining, the circumstancés of the robbery, suspicions and arrest, were related. Burke felt interested, and resolved to investigate. He conversed. with Gilchrist, and detected agitation, but could get no clue, While this was going on,.Mrs. Parsons, with the perception and restless curiosity of woman, having noted Gilchrist’s every movement, resolyed to investigate on her°owm account. Haviag seen Gilchrist visit an out house, and return quickly, as the agent and officer approached, she rightly conjectured that he might have left evidence--of guilt. So, providing herself with a candle, alter brief searchiag discovered gold coin in the vault, recently hidden, which she hastened to’ report. Burke, no lenger in doubt, quickly and unob, servedly got his Spencer’s rifle, and at a favorable moment brought. it .to bear on Gilchrist’s breast, demanding surrender, which was accorded with the utmost nonchalance, the prisoner demanding by what authority. Burke, equally cool, patted his Spencer while yet in position, and replied “it was that ;” however, when Gilchrist was informed that coin had been found, bis agitation was plainly apparent. The remains of a young lady, 16 years of age, a daughter of Capt. Freer, were foand to be quite limber, after having been brought from Maryland in a close coffin. Ry the aid of a galvanic battery a pulse of five beats to the minute was produced, but Ahe doctor was finally compeiied ‘to de sist om the sad conviction that all farther efforts at resuscitation would be useless, He was of the opinion, however, that had medical assistance been rendered at an earlier period the life of the young lady would ‘have probably been saved.
