ve ir id ve o_o __at that time was not known. NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, LOCAL . INTELLIGENCE,Ja McCue vs. Stack anp RanROAD CoMPANIES.—Most of our readers remeniber well the redoubtable Jim McCue who carried on such a lively opposition in days gone’ by to the California Stage Company, first between North San Juan and Marysville and afterwards between this city and Sacrariento—and no man or set of men ever annoyed the Company as did McCue. The Company could always manage to pun or buy off all but. the hero of our yarn. Not only by reducing the fates toa living rate he annoyed them, but by bidding for carrying the mails on their principal and best paying routes. Jim Haworth, the President of the old company, will admit to-day that he was the “worst egg” they éver ran against. McCue was not to be. bought or blaffed off. He was a sociable fellow, popular with travelers, and withal a good-hearted man, But the railroad, favored the old company, giving them a reduction in tickets, arid this of course goon let Jim out, The next thing we -hear of him he was a passenger on the Pacific Railroad from Sacramento to Colfax. When the Conductor called for his ticket Jim handed the fare to hiny in greenbacks: The Conductor refused it, and McCue was put off the cars. Going back to Sacramento he commenced suit against the company for $50,000 damages. Whatever became of this suit we do not know. Jim . had occasion to go over the line again, offering as before his greenbacks. The Conductor again refused them, but let Jim continue on his journey free of charge. On -his return to. Sacramento the’ Conductor reported the case to the company. The result of the conference months ago.a friend of ours was on the cars coming to Colfax, and when the Conductor came along he commenced searching for his ticket, and McCue, who was ptanding opposite, asked, “What are you looking for? your ticket ?’? Our friend ‘replied that he was. “Well,” said Jim; “I’ll swear you’re green. I go over this road when I feel like it, and have made up my mind ‘that this company never. shall have another dollar of my money. . I’ve paid them all I ever intend to, and am going to ride in their first class cars whenever I d——n please ; and if they . don’t like it they can go to h—1!” We learn on good authority that the railroad company have come to the conclusion that Jim is a hard customer, and in order to save further annoyance have issued instructions to. the Conductors, “not to say anything about fare to Jim-McCue, but let him come and.go over the road whenever and wherever he pleases.” CHANGE IN THE Post OF FICE.—Postmaster Guild, with a view te the comfort of those who have business at the General Delivery of the Post Office, has moved that department to the inside of the building, and fitted up a window where parties who have occasion to apply for letters will ndt be required to stand on the street as heretofore. This change will be welcomed by the public. M. Cannon, County Recorder elect, has removed with his family from Omega to this city, having secured the house formerly occupied by Fred. Miller, ‘adjoining J: J. Ott’s place, on Nevada street. Mr. Cannon’s term of office will commence on the first Monday of March. CHANGE OF TimE.—The stages of ~Colby’s Nevada and Dutch Fiat line will hereafter leave this city at 1 o’clock P. M,, daily to connect~-with the Hastward bound passenger train at Dutch Flat station. The stages of this line arrive in this city at 11 o’clock a. M. daily, with passengers and mails from ' the Hast. BALTIMORE OysTERS.—A lot of Baltimore oysters were brought to this city on Thursday last, and sold for $2 25 per can, the can containing about five dozen. 3 BENEVOLENT.—Jas. Monro and G. v. Schmittburg will collect subscriptions to the Benevolent Society to-day, Leorung ‘To-Nicnr.—The young and popular authoress Miss Anna M. Morrison, will lecture at the rooms of the Yonng Men’s Christian Association to-night. She is highly spoken of, and as her lecture is free, there will no doubt be a good attendance. Her subject, “Memory, and its influences” is an excellent one, and she will undoubtedly do it justice. UnbDER SHERIFF PotrEeR who was thrown’from his sulky a few days since at Grass Valley, is still confined ‘to his room. His knee and ankle are considerably, swoolen, and he is unable to walk without crutches: .THE Vallejo Recorder says there is not money enough in the State to move the agricultural products, or our railways and navigable rivers would not be lined with sacks of grain which should long since have been in market. Tue Sun Peart is decidedly the best‘preparation for the removal of tan, freckles, &c., fromthe face, ever mtroduced into the market. It is for sale at every drug store throughout the land. Dyspepsia in the Pacific Nowhere in the United States has dyspepsia heretofore been. more general, or marked with more distressing spmptom:s, than in California. Luxury,”high living and dissipation in the cities; hardship, privation, irregular habits, and the effects of malaria in the mining regions, have combined to render CuRontc INDIGESTION one of the most terrible scourges of the Pacific States. It isa source of satisfaction, therefore, to be able to report THE GRADUAL AND STEADY DECLINE OF THE DISEASE and its distressing concommittants on this side of the Continent. As this happy change n to be perceptible soon after HOSTETTER’S STOMACH BITTERS had attained the rank of a sTaNDARD REMEDY ir this region, and as it has become more and more apparent, in proportion to the increasing sales of the gREAT VEGETABLE &PECIFIC, reason suggests that the bane has been . Of the @ENIAL BLIxr advertised as its ANTIpots. Unprejudiced physicians admit this to be the fact, and abandoning all the ordinary stimulants, as well as the astringent tinctures and mineral excitanta of the pharmacopaia, are now prescribing the BITTERS as a cure POR EVERY FORM OF INDIGESTION, The preparation possesses three great advantages over every other so-called stomachic, It is Nor MERELY A TONIC, but combines the properties of an ANTI-BILIOUS MEDECINE, & GENTLE LAX, ATIVE, and & BLOOD: DEPURENT, with those of a WHOLESOME STIMULANT, It neither depletes nor excites; but strengthens, soothes, purifies and restores. No medicine ever introduced into the Pacific region has so entirely gained the confidence of every class of society, or approached in the extent. of its sales HOSTETTER’S BITTERS. = — TOYS. TOYS.
