Lecal Brevities,
George Gephard from Rough -and . .
Ready, was ib town yesterday, fand
favored us with a call. George has
become disgasted with politics, and .
will in the fattire attend strictly to
road matters, having, as he says,
the best toll road in-Nevada county,

The gentlemen who recently celebrated the Democratic victories, had
considerable difficeltf in trying to
persuade a persistent J’renchnan
the‘otber night that the same umbrella could belong to two individu-.
als. We believe he did not*sucoced.
' His early efforts prove him well fitted to train in the ranks af his

‘no doubt he will be prémoted at the
earliest cpportanity. 4
Oue of the Montgomery Brothets
éaie up from their ranch near Penn
Valley-yesterday, with a large load
of fine cabbages for the National
Hotel. ‘That ranch is Very: ‘produc
tive property. Its owners! live on
the fat of the land, drive the best
horses, and are on general principles
what may be called the salt of the
earth.
A more quiet and orderly town
than Nevada can not be found anywhere. A tight is of ‘very raré ococcurrence, and the operations of
of petty thieves are hardly known,
There are no cases of suffering on
account of poverty, and all are content
with their lot. Giving thanks on
the 26th ought to be very general,
C. H. Bury of the Exchange Hotel Grass Valley, will give a grand
_Bon Bon Party at Hamilton Hallon
Thanksgiving evening. The supper
will be given at the Exchange Hotel} 35.
Mr. Bury aud assistants, propose to
make all happy who attend. To
that party some of the dancing fraternity of this city are going.
Geo. 8. Waters, formerly of Grass
Valley, ran for District Attorney in.
White Pine CountyNevada,at the last
election. Thecounty went Repub. liean.by.450.majority, yet George
was defeated by only twenty. votes,
all of which speaks well for him.
The first of the series of dancing
parties to be given at %the hotels;
which was to have-taken place on
Thursday evening next, bas been
postponed two weeks, in consequence of the intention of the Episcopal society to give one on Friday
“evening, the 20th.
Amusement is not likely to be
scarce this Winter. The various societies in this city are making preparations for a series of entertainments that will fill up the time so
there can be no complaint made for
want of a place to go to.
Prospecting seems to be going on
ata lively rate al} around. When
prospect rock pays on an average
$25. a ton,as it has here this Summer,
it would seem a profitablebusiness
to those engaged in it.
When you find no mail in your
box at the Post Office, look over. the
wheel; if you fine nothing there,
then ask the Post Master for. your . ’
mail. Such things are frequently
done, and are some of the pleasures
of a Postmaster.
We learn that the amount of coarse
feed, with the exception of hay, is
very small in this vicinity. Our
feed stores depended on good roads
for a month longer, and failed to
lay in their usual supply.
‘The new paving on the streets is
being packed down very solidly.
The ground is in just the right condition, and a good road is the result.
“The rain seems opposed to letting
~ goitshold. It was cloudy most of
the day yesterday.
No mail ariived in thie city from
the East yesterday. ~~

first lecture will be on Saturday or

will be given, however.

Put these two questions to a man passing
through the alternate paroxysms of fever
and ague, and he will probably reply, ‘‘Be-4
cause I cannot help myself.” But he ‘is
mistaken, He can help himself. He
need not continue to endure the marrowsearching cold and parching heat of inter.
mittent fever unless he chooses.
If there is an established fact in the history of medication, it is this: that Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters invariably breaks up
the fits-of this exhausting disease. Quinine often fails, and whether it fails or
not, it is always a dangerous medicine,
It stupefies the brain. The Bitters have
no such effect. Quinine shatters the nervous system.

Medicines, as a general rule, are ‘‘bad to
take.” Notso this famous vegetable specific. It is.mild and agreeable, not pungent and nauseuting. The liver is always
greatly disordered in intermittent and re
miitent fevers, and this excellent tonic
and alterative has anti-billious properties
of the highest order. The stimulant employed to diffuse its medicinal virtues
through the organs of the body is perfectly pure, and this caanot Le ssid of the

best advice that can be given to persons
residing in malarious regions, or in crowded cities, is to take it as a.preventive of
diseases incident to both. Whether used

will be found wonderfully efficacions.
