The Teachers in Session—Yesterday’s Opening Exercises—Today’s Program. : At 1:30 Superintendent Tiffany Miss Rose Alexander favored the Institute with an instrumental solo. Miss Sadie O’Donnell .was_.appointed temporary secretary, and proceeded to call the roll, which exposed the absence of many teachers. M, B. B. Potter, C. L. Brown and Mrs. M. V. Leech were nominated for Vice President. The rules were suspended by resolution, a vote by ballot ordered, and Mr. Potter duly elected. Miss Sadie O’Donnell was unanimously elected Secretary. Prof. E. K. Hill, R.-G. Fitsgerald, Miss Mattie Bradley, Mrs. M. were appointed a committee on resolutions. Miss Maggie McNichols, Miss Hannah Skehan and F. T. Nilon were appointed a committee of arrangements. ~— Superintendent Tiffany said he was notable to proceed with the address for which he was placed upon the program, but would tr time before the session ended. He Institute later this year than usual because he could not secure lecturers to come earlier, and beccause he hoped to have pleasant weather now. He was glad to see some teachers present whose schools have already closed for! theseason. He regarded it is an evidence of interest in the work that he hoped would lead to good results. The annual city election which took place yesterday was vigorousdates and their friends putting in a good-sized amount of good solid work. No bitter animosities were developed, but there ‘was an intensity of feeling between some of the aspirants that. made things quite interesting. At12 o’clock noon 218 votes had been cast,and when the polls were closed at sundown 644 had been recorded. Circuit Court, 9th District, of California. . —_——_—oo Broad Street Victorious. —— The two nines of base ballists representing Broad and Commercial streets came together at Cashin’s field Sunday afternoon and the Commercialists got badly scooped. It was perhaps the worst game of ball ever played in the county by full grown men. They hada good umpire (Wm. Hutchinson) and the fairness of his decisions was about the only thing in the contest deserving of favorable mention: It is suspected-by some that the Commercial street club was ‘‘throwing off” in order to get the Broad streeters to play again and ‘stake 4 substantial consideration on the result, but this is probably a mistake.
