SENIOR AND MIDDLE CLASSES.
“(B. F. Hedden, teacher.)
Opening Song, America, School:
negotiations for a transfer of the con. ritt.
trol of the property to S. Wheeler and
Geo. G. Allan have been consummated
by Messrs. Gowell, Heath and the
other stockholders selling their interest to these two gentlemen.
The men who have been: prospecting for some time past at the old Gold
Tunnel mine, which was many years
ago regarded as one of the richest
claims of this district, have made important developments. A new and
large ledge of high grade ore has been
found, and it is made apparent that
the pioneer owners worked only on a
smaller and less valuable body of ore.
It is confidently anticipated that before
the summer is over the Gold Tunnel
will be giving employment to a large
force of miners.
A gentleman from the neighborhood of the California quartz mine
near Graniteville says it is currently .
reported there that Messrs. Foley &
Co. have sold the property for something like half a million of dollars.
There isa conflict of statements as tu
whether the mine has really changed
_ hands or not.
A Liberal Response.
The pupils of the city schools responded very liberally to the call for
money to buy a flag-for the Washington building, as will be seen by the

TWO BIDS MADE.
Nevada County’s Tw6 Offers for
@ State Institution.
This advertisement has — recently
bean published in some of the metro
politan-papers:
Sealed proposals for a permanent
site for the California Home for Care
and Training of Feeble-Minded Children will be received by the Trustees
on or before May Ist. Bids will state
price per acre for not less than 300
acres, character of land, elevation, water supply, climate, distance from riilroad depot or steamer landing, improvements and any other detuils of
probable interest.
Proposals to be endorsed ‘‘Proposals
for site for home,” and addressed to
Mrs. Kate B. Laturop,
1311 Hyde st., San Francisco.
The’ advertisement did not escape
the notice of Nevada county’s eagleeye. Two bids from here have been
sent in to the Trustees who Wave
an appropriation of $150,000 to expead
on the site they may select.
One bid, as heretofore stated, is
made through Senator Preston, the
way between this city and Grass Valley. It consists of the Glenbrook, Pat
Hall and Sutton Ranch _ properties,
and a portion of the Ismert place.
Its advantages have already been enlarged upon.
The other proposition submitted
was forwarded by Assemblyman Sims
and is for a tract of land atthe head
of Selby Flat a mile and a halfor two
miles in a northerly direction froin
tais city. It embraces the properties
one or two other pieces of land adjoining. Portions of each ofthese are under a high state of cultivation. On
the Dunn place is one of the finest
dwelling houses in the county, and
the Hall dwelling is a spavious, comfortable structure. The. soil is rich,
the drainage perfect, and’a practically
unlimited supply of water under any
desired pressure can be obtained at
all seasons from the Sonth Yuba Company’s ditch. There are numerous
springs of water on the places, enough
timber to furnish fuel for many years,
a quarry-of the best quality of. granite
is near at hand, and fire-clay out of
which to make bricks can be obtained
therein abundance.
Both of these sites possess many
natural advantages, and they are offered to the State at surprisingly low
prices. The trustees will come in due
Time to examine and pass upon them.
The Curly Bear Ball.
The ball to be given at Armory Hall
next Friday evening under the auspices of Cave No. 1, Curly Bear Degree,
will present many entertaining features. The committee of arrangements
are makinglittlea stir on the outside, but they are doing a heap of nysterious planning. and connubiating
which will materialize in due time.
A genuine live bear will he among the
participantsin the proceedings, and a
bear meat lunch which all the guests
will be invited tu partake of will be
served. The new Curly Bear Band
will muke ite debut and give a pron =
enade concert, and the souvenir programs tobe distributed will more
than come up.to the expectations of
the public.

The Liberty Hill Miners Ordered
to Show Cause.
Deputy United States Marshal Darwin on Wednesday served papers on
mine and men. who are alleged to have
been. working the Liberty Hill. hydraulic mine of Little York township,
citing them to appear on Monday,
June 3d,.before Judge Sawyer of the
United States Circuit Court and show
cause why they should not be enjoined
from continuing their operations.
The names of the men served are as
follows: Barney Maguire, Michael
Skeahan, J. Enright, J. Philips, P.-J.
Mowyer, Ed. O’Brien, John O’Brien,
John Tebbetts and James Reagan.
Suit was begun against the Liberty
Hill mine a long time ago, but all
efforts to obtain service on the defendants were unavailing until this week.
Several times attempts were mude to
capture them by strategic moves on
the part of the anti-mining spies, but
they had a happy faculty of smelling
danger from afar and “taking to the
brush’? at the critical moment, On
one oceasion-a-few months ago they
had a narrow escape, being compelled
to beat such a hasty retreat that
several of them left portions of their
clothing behind.
Last Monday, having: voluntarily
concluded to quit work’ there, they
dismantled the monitor and pipes,
and when Darwin called two days
later he had no difficulty in interviewing then. They are now engaged in
cleaning up the sluices and bedrock
preparatory to seeking a livelihood —in
anotler direction, as they feel that no
matter what sort of a showing they
make before Judge Sawyer he will
grant the injunction asked by the antimining cranks and schemers.

Seme Points About Next Tuesday
Evening’s Concert.
The Urso concert music is something that everybody appreciates.
Much difficulty is experienced in findtastes. Artists wh> become great in
the musical world are too apt to forget
that all persons do not understand the
than witha great number. Perhaps
Madam Urso owes her immense popularity with all classes of people to the
fact that she is generous with her
music and endeavors to please. As
an instance, is the assurance of the
manager that in the new program to
be given at the Methodist Church in
this city on Tuesday evening next
Madame Urso is announced for three
numbers, and as she has never been
known to refuse her hearers an encore,
this means six pieces by her among
which are promised her famous arrangement of ‘‘The Last Rose of Summer.’’ Her marvelous rendition of
this air always reduces an audience
intoa state of breathless enjoyment,
