NEVADA CITY, CAL.LOCAL AFFAIRS.
Local Brevities.
We have often read and heard tell
of people trying to keep the Wolf
from their door, but, here they do
differently. There has been one “at
the door of one of. the families of
this city for several weeks, trying to
gain admittance, and en Sunday
_night, as will be seen by reference to
another: column, he effected’ an entrance without resistance, and became & permanent member of the
family,
A. weather sharp says the rain this
Winter will commence every time on
the last of the week,
Waiting for the stage will probably continue to be a good excuse for

The Chicago Inter-Ocean says:
“Hundreds of children have fallen
victims to searlet.fever in that city
during the last three months. Concerning the treatment of this disease
an eminent physician says he does
not failin effecting a cure more than
ence in @ hundred cases, by giving
_ the patients warm lemonade witly
gum arabie dissolved in it. A cloth
. wrang out in hot water and laid upon the stomach shonld be renewed
asrapidly as it becomes cool. -To
' this simple treatment the most ob stinate cases seldom fail to succumb.””
oo
The Union of Sunday says’ Mr.
Andrew Fryer, who had his face
burned with hot lead the other day,
is getting along finely. He has one
eye bandaged, Lut the sight is. not
impaired. He reads the hewspaper
' with the other eye, smokes ‘his regular cigar and is generally enjoying
himself,
~Sf<JThe storm did some damage to the
embankments of the railroads. That
being built across the ravine on Gold
‘Flat by Tom Hughes was partly
washed away, and in other places.
slight damage was done. The Union
says at Union Hill part of an em<bankment was washed ont. . It is
probable that more or lesa damage
was done en the whole line “of the
road. But itis what was expected.
It takes one wet season to thoroughly
Settle new maderoads. —__
Theamount of water which fell
has been sufficient to afford a supply
to those miners who are ready for
work, We hear, however, that all
are not ready to avail themselves of
‘it. It seems strange that such is the
fact. One Would think jthat eight
months of fine weather in the year
would be sufficient time for all needed repairs. —

J, EB. Johnston has just returned
from San Franciseo, where he purchased the largest and finest stock
of furniture ever seen in this county.
Owing to the stringency of the mon
ey market, and the fact that he had
the cash to pay for .goods, he was
ble him to sell at lower prices than
the same gvods can be purchased
for in San Francisco by other dealers. His old stock has been nearly
sold out, and nothing bnt new goods
the.time to buy farniture cheap. If
those needing articles in his lite
will call, they will be convinced that
there is no humbug aboiit the mat. ter. The large stock will be sold
forty per cent. cheaper than the same
canbe bought for in any other house
in this eounty. Call and see the
