NEVADA CITY, GAl.
— LOCAL AFFAIRS,
Squashes. Jo Y '
It is nomse disguising the fact that
_+we have good soil here in the
mountains as can be found anywhere
‘in the world, To illustrate: On Sun‘day last a gentleman of this city invited a friend to dine with him, and
after dinner they took a walk out in
the. yard.tosee the fruit, The guest
started to the lower part of the yard,
ye place which had not Deen visited
“by the owner ‘for six ‘months, {the
whole lot is_only-TUx280} and. re.
marked tht the ‘Squasbes ‘looked
very fine--The ewner was of the
‘opinion that. his guest was making
fun of him, and befure replying
weut to that part’ of the Jot where
the guest stood, which on account ef’
its being a steep declivity was hidden
from the ownér’s view, whén Jo, and
vehold, thete were fifteen” or twenty
squashes, weighing from 10 to 50
pounds each. Lhe squashes were.
never planted, but the cleanings’
of the kitchen, had been thrown
there, and among it a Jot of ‘squash
seed.» Some of them took root and
‘yielded enough squashes to last the
family all Winter.
a
lia a Apples One Cent per Pound.
No portion of the, State of Celifornia duces finer apples or more
bountiful Taxyests “than Nevada
county. Nearly every cottage has
its Oreherd of Su kicikof fruit, apples predominating. , A™ ursory
glance at the gardens in this cit mie
its environs, willshow the ground
covered with choice apples rotting
forthe want of a market. Any variety of good Winter apples can be
had for owe-cent per pound by picking them, which a great many prefer doing in order to avoid having
bruised apples. The abundance of
fruit raised in this vicinity has convinced many that the purchase of an
Alden ‘fruit drying machine would
prove a profitable investment, and
we understand arrangements are being made, to forma company in this
‘city for the purpose of going’ into
the business next Summer; We beliéve it will prove a remunerative
business. sn

Deer Meat.
We yesterday saw a fine deer hanging in front of Jas. Monro’s meat
market, on Commercial street, .We
“interviewed Jimmy astg where the
animal was killed, but found him as
ignorant on the subject as ourselves.
The venison came up on the Grass
Valley stage, labeled, ‘‘James Monro
Nevada City;’’ but whether it was
killéd-east; west, north or south of
this place he is unable tosay. The
deer will bé cut up to-day, and some
of our readers will have the pleasure
of indulging in roast venison for dinner,

Signs of Character in the, Face. {,
This evening at the Theatre, Prefessof McDonald and Dr. Rice will
deliver a lecture upon Physiognomy,
or how to read character from the
external signs. The .former as a
Lecturer and Phrenologist,is a favorite everywhere. ‘Fhe latter as a
Physician, has a ripe experience,
and treats disease with the most
happy results. Their roem is at the
National Hotel. —
County Taxes.
Collector Sanford and his Deputy
are ‘now on their rounds through the
‘county collecting State and-—county
taxes. To-day. he will be at You
Bet. On Saturday at Truckee, on
Monday and Tuesday at Grass Valley, and close up at the Bank
of Nevada County in this city’
on Friday and Saturday of next
week. All tax payers should pay up
immediately dnd get the matter off
their hands,

Why Shake? Why Barn?
Put these two Questions to a man passing
through the alternate paroxysms of fever
and ague, and he will probably reply, ‘‘BeCause I cannot help myself.” But he,is
mistaken. He can help himself. He
‘need not continue to endure:'the marrowsearching cold and parching heat of intermittent fever unless he chooses.
If there is an established fact in the history of medication, it is this: that Hostetter's Stomach Bitters invariably, breaks up
the fits of this exhausting disease. Quinine often fails, and whether it fails or
not, it is always a dangerous medicine.
It stupefies the brain. The Bitters have
no such effect. -Quinine shatters the ner.
vous system. The Bitters on the other
hand, are a glorious nervine; in fact, a specific for nervous ailments. j
Medicines, as a general rule, are “bad to
take.” Not so this famous vegetable specific. Itis mild and agreeable, not’ pungent and nauseating. The liver is always
greatly disordered in intermittent and re
mittent fevers, and this excellent tonic
and alterative has anti-billious properties
of the highest order. ,The stimulant employed to diffuse its medicinal virtues
through the organs of the body is perfectly pure, and this cannot be ssid of the
spirituous basis of any other tonic. The
best advice that can be given to persons
ed cities, is to take it as a preventive of
diseases incident to both. Whether used
asa protective antidote or a remedy, ¢
