ReTmeo,~Br. Avery, of the Marysville
Appeal, Was retired from the editorial on
of that. paper, after editing it with si
manliness and earnestness during & «period 4
three and a half years,. His valedictory is
published in the Appeal of Taesdav, and
_ barring an, inaccuracy and the personal na' tire of the article, it is characteristic of the
oan The. —inageuraey ja_in_stating that [
. when he took charge of the Appeal thetewas
no other paper sdvocating . “anti-slavery
ideas and.governmental reform” in the north-.
ern part of the State. The old files of tha
Nevada Journaldisclose the fact that we
"had been driving away openly at. that basi“nese a good many months before Bro. Avery
went to Marysville to edit the Appeal. But,
then, we were not of much account, and it
is no matter if our humble efforts are overBro. Avery gives some rampant fellows a.
delicate hit in the following paragraph, which
we hope will not be lost on them:
There are some who object-to the manner
in which those eneenis are now or were
lately defended by me. I do not take their
criticiam unki ly when I reflect thgt it
proceeds from recent converts to the cause,
who, to atone for their early hostility, rash
furiously upon the field where victory has
been won, and snatch the weapons (with the
rims perhaps) frown the bande of veterans
gin the pursuit. It is gratifying to
a ona enemies become such zealous al.
lies. . ‘Trath je wighty and will prevail.—
May its adherents multiply..
“Mr. Avery has reaped the sini reward of
services rendered to others. It is due to his
labors chiefly that Yuba county is what itis.
pélitically. There are men in that county
whom he developed from urity inte
prominence, and, yet after he tind spent the
energies of years, and all the means he poss
sessed, upon the county andits men, the
_ county throwed ite vote in the State convention againet him, and ‘ome of the men he
had made politically; were instrumental in
doing the ungrateful business. It was done,
too, without any decent pretext. Avery
passes Over allthis, for itis his nature ty forgive-and be, dncomplaining,
We regret that Mr. Avery has retired
from the Appeal, but, we trust, soon to hear
from /him in a more-extended field of usefulnesé, San Francisco.is the place for his. talext to find full seope; and there we hope. he
‘will establish himself, to. be —. as
_/ he'deserves to be. .
EF The navy ‘bas 0 . so incfeased that it is
difficult to find men for the ships. Previous
to the war our naval forces numbered 7,000,
‘now the number of men is 50,000. In the
steam vessels, ordinary seamen and boys
compose the greater partof the crews. The
"wages offered are good, and the prize money
ia as much inducement as the bounties offered to soldiers. In some cases the prize money is the chief consideration. Inthe case
of the prize steamer Columbia, captured by
the Santiago de Cuba, the prize money
amounts to one hundred and thirty-six thousand dollara, afd the shate of each ordinary
‘eeamen will be. $215 43; the seamen $276
95; landamen $184 07, and firemen $461 33.
It ia estimated that the amount of priae money accruing to each seamen who has setved
for two yeats past on boatd the Santiago de
Ceba will amount to over two thousand dollate.

WE have now in the United States at
lenst two hundred and thirty-five general
hospitals for the use of the suldivrs, contain. . ™
ing about 80,000 patients. To show on what
& large ecale our battles have been fought, as
we do everything elee, it seems that.duting
four months of 1862 there were treated at
our hospitals 20,930 cases of gunshot wounde.
The wounded of the’ wholé British army in
the Crimean war was only a little over 12
000,, and their entire hospital aecommodations in the three years would not have suf.
ficed for the wounded at either of the battles
