STATE Arb To IMMIGRATION —We
‘ have receiveda circular, headed “Chamber of Commerce Rooms,” Sun Francisco, asking a number of questions in regard to the extent, availability and advantages offered for settlers in Nevada
county. All these matters, have been
=—=—
ORIPT, and we shall continue from tite
to time to.answer them for the benefit
of the “Chamber of Commerce.” We
ROW propose to say a. few words in regard,to the opening proposition of the
signed by Alexander D. Bell. It commences as fuilows:
__“It is proposed to_ask the ‘next Leg_ Concerned, it will be a waste of the
_ its inhabitants, and while it would be
—_‘meglected
. this State in the hope of making a for__ this State for years, and is as uncertain
_ member that population without emwho all are employed, than to have
islature to make a liberal appropriation
of public funds, with the especial view
of encouraging European and Eastern
farmers, with means and families, to
settle in this State.” —
How the Chamber of Commerce proposes to dispose of this “liberal appropriation,” whether as a bonus to farmere of means from Europe and the East,
we are not informed, but we are pretty
well convinced of the fact that so far
as the general welfare of the State is
public funds. We hayealways thought
that the welfare of-a locality should depend on the enterprise and energy of
. the company obtained from the U. S_holders the President says; “Last month
Government a patent for 284 acres; covering the Eureka lode for a length cf
1,680 feet, with all ite dips, angles and
variations—the procurement of the patent although attended with considerable
expense and trouble, is worth more
. than it cost, as the coripany’s title is
now perfect, and beyond attack from
any quarter. During the past year the
company have bought the Roannuise
mine (or $7-40ths of it), adjoining the
Eureka on the west, and comprising
2,000 feet in length on the Eureka lode,
with all dips, angles, etc. This is
‘thought to be an important acquisition
‘forthe future of the company, as it
ives with the ground previously owned,
3,680 feet on the lode, with only 1,400
feet prospected.”
‘The Superintendent furnishes the
following particulars of the workings of
the mine : 21,526 tons of quartz have
been hoisted, and 20,588 tons crushed in
8074 working days, averaging 66} tons
per day, with'30 stamps; on surface,
1,798 tons;. have worked 187 tons of
sulphurets, and have 70 tons on hand
valued at $10,000; have driven 1,085
feet of drifts; sunk 200 fect of winze,
and 80} feet of the main shaft; 4th
level drifts are 1,418 feet in length, and
well enough for the State to offer premiums for the encouragement of certain industries, which will be beneficial
to the entire State, and for which every
resident may compete, we are utterly
Opposed to placing at the disposal of
any set of men, public funds, which
may be used-to the advancement oi
one locality, while. others -are-entirely .
Why should the “Chamber of Commerce” want money from the State to
induce men of means to come and settle in this State. Satisfy such men that
our farmers are doing better than they,
that the lands yield abundance, and
that for the sarplus there is “ample
market, and they will come without the
expenditure of the State funds. It inducements are to be used let those who
hope to be benefitted organise immigrant aid societies and supply funds
by private contributions, and then let
them be careful not to deceive “men of
means’ by inducing them to come to
tune without labor, or under the im.
provident and exhaustive system of
farming which has been carried on in
in profit as “gambling stocks” or “prospecting for quartz.”
Tose who are now calling so lustily
for immigrants to this State, should reployment, would only impoverish the
country. It would be far better to have
& population of 1,000 ina community,
10,000 where only one third can obtain
employment or are producers. ° The
first effort of the people of this State
should be directed to effecting auch
changbs in labor as will produce commodities for which there is an active
demand to supply the people with what
they want. Such producers, supplied
‘with manufactures to adapt other com.
modities to use, would soon bring prosperity. It does seem a little strange
that while in San Francisco they have
an employment society, established by
private contributions, to furnish the
large number of idle men with places,
they now inprist Upon encouraging a
large immigration; especially where interest is greater and money harder to
get on good security than in most of the
Eastern States, We are satisfied the
Chamber of Commerce has taken the
wrong course, as we do not believe im.
migration will felp us materially until
sone of the evils existing are corrected,
and when we do need immigrants, we
believe that the State funds should not
be applied, but that each locality should

symptoms are clearly set forth and in
the hands of careful persons the work
will’ be found invaluable, especially
when in slight disorders, a physician
can not be obtained. It treats of fevers,
liver, indigestion, and in fact all the
diseases. The work is written in plain
English, so that it can be clearly understoud by any one of ordinary intelli_
gence. A letter, speaking of the book,
says: “We know from persona] knowltia and scarlet fever remeay is a sure
cure.” This alone would be worth the
subscription price. Aside from its medical character, the work contains large
number of receipts for the preparation
nursing which render it valuable in
every family, though for the treatment of diseases they might prefer to
trust a physician. There area hundred
things here: told which;-would give
nourishment to the sick and comfort
them in their suffering, which come
within the duties of a good nurse, and
do not interfere with the duties of the
physician. E. A. Foster of this city, is
the agent for the work in this county,
and will supply subscribers at $450
per copy. The book is neatly printed
and substantially bound.
