Mining for precious metals is a
stable, legitimate business, founded
on solid, economical ' principles, far
more oertain,n its results than the
~~amajorityet recognized fegitimate com-mercial enterprises. As the Black

to bé considered in mining are the
quantity and cost of production ; the
market is never glutted, the precious
metals ‘ate almost” invariable, the
thousand and one financial troubles
which disturb and prostrate ‘other
industries do not affect it. Without
‘the elements of success any business
must bea failure, The banker must
have capital, the merchant goods and .
. the miner a mine.
In years past
men without experience, devoid «of
practical knowledge, had to take
ohances on mines, To-day we have
experts who make the business a
speciality, and are qualified for it by
practice and education to pronounce
on the value ofa mine, . The day of
going it blind on a property is past;
there «must be development and
something jm sight, the. value of
which can be made apparent by
mathematical demonstration. A developed property will sell for a mine,
but a prospect hole will bring oealy
what it is worth as a speculation, —
Prove it or Take it Back.
It has been asserted that four
‘members of the Sacramento Board
of Supervisora were offered $20,000
_ to let certain outsiders (representa~
tives of the hydraulic mining industry being meant) name the attorney
to be employed by that county in the
anti-slicken suits. The Bee publishes the statement for truth, Now
wwe are auxious, incommon with all
other law-respecting people, to know
something more, about this alleged
transaction. Is there any. truth in
is, or is it kimply a slander invented
by McClatchy & Co, to advance ‘the
. cause of Cadwalader and his ring?
If it is not the latter, as mach can
be readily proven, , If such. proof is
not forthcoming without delay the
originators of the statement must submit to being branded as liara and
slanderers who deserve no better fate
than having a big stone tied to their
necks and being thrown into a deep
mining reservoir.

Another Ex-Nevadan.
Tho party referred te in the following extract froin the San Franciseo Post is supposed to be the same
queer little Sam. Price who usel to
reside in this city, being employed as
ajssiesman by A, Goldsmith the dry
goods merchant, He was a very eccentric fellow and a butt of ridicule,
forall whom: he came in contact
with. The Post says: ‘Samuel
Price, solicitor and collector for
Katle & Co., shoe manufacturers,
skipped Thursday, it is alleged, taking with him, $1,090 ‘ef-thea firm’s
money which he had collected the
previous day. Price was formerly
with Marks & Bolina, but for six
months past has been in Earl & Co.’s
employ. When Mr. Earl called on
hid customers on collection day he
found that Price had been before: him
and had scooped in the amounts due,
Price is unmarried, aged 35, and
said to be a devotee of the ‘tiger.’ ”
When Kin Meets King, .
When Mr. and Mrs, Johan W.
' Mackay were in Stockholm recently
they were graciously received and
entertained by King @scar of Sweden. About the same time Mackay’s
partner, Col. Fair, at his fine new
residence in San Francisco, was entertaining Kong Kalakaua of the
Sandwich Islands. Thus do the
two Bonanza Kings affiliate with national Kings. Four kings is generally.eonsidered to be & pretty good
hand. Our two Bonanza Kings certainly are a good hand by themselves.
In fact, financially speaking, they
may. be considered a ‘*flush.”—Gold
Hill News.

The Marysville Express is.getting
ont of patience, It says: When the
miners proposed to prevent this debris from coming down the rivers the
city of Maryavillevery graffly declined the proposition, This ‘‘beautiful city” in fact drew down on its
own bead the destruction that now
threatens hery She has been repeatedly warned in time but all along declined to listen to the admonitions.
True enough her position is ’ deplorable at present, But she has appealed
to the courts for help. They have
failed.to give the implored assistance
as everybody -knew they would from
the start, But if the ‘heartless hydraulic miners” should cease pouring
their tailings down in what respect
would her condition’ be changed?
The debris in the rivers would still
imminent, -If Marysville would devote some of the zeal now wasting in
senseless legal struggles to protective measures, she would have less
cause to fear the wrath to come. If
she had shown any disposition to act
fairly in the matter, assistance
would flow in from the miners theim-eelves to provide the needed prdtection,
