4 _~ first one that moved, and steppiirg into AG NR ~ eee She Daily TF _ NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, Attempr aT Stack Roppery.—An Whsuccessful attempt was made to rob Gregory & English’s stage, which runs from Lake City to Moore’s Flat, on Mon. day evenings This stage connects with Gregory & English’s Eureka.stage—at} Lake,City and carries passengers into Moore’s Flat. On Monday a shipment of $400 was made from -Marks & Co’s4 banking house in Lake City to. the’ ‘banking house ‘of the same firm at Moore’s Flat.. It-was placed in the express box, which consists of a chilled iron safe locked with a combination lock, inside of a wooden box, the latter being also locked with a hasp and padlock. The stage was driven by McKinney, the only passenger being Kite Robinson, of Eureka ‘South. About half a mile east of the Back Bone House on a slight rise in the road, a man came out from the brush, and told the driver to “stop and put his foot .on the brake, or he would blow his d——d head off.” —The-driver-asked-him-what-hewanted;. and the robber replied, “I’m not after you. I want that box.” The driver told him to “wade in, if he thought he ‘could get it.” The robber wasdlone, and armed with an eight inch revolver. As soon asthe stage was stopped he told the parties that he would kill the the stage, laid his pistol upon the seat, and commenced work upon the express box with a cold chisel. He succeeded in cutting the hagp of the outer box and worked sometinie at the inner one. The driver said to him, “If you are going to blow up that box let me get,down and get my horses off.” _The robber replied_. anscript, . We would advise parties ‘oing East to read their advertisement and give them a <all. . FEAT oF A Rat.—On Monday night a canary bird belonging to Ch. Frerrand , was killed by a rat. The cage was sus pended from the ceiling, over a table, the distance from the table to the cage have sprung from the table to the cage, and forced himself through between the wires.’ When Ferrand entered the gallery the bird had been killed, and partially eaten. No place could be seen where the rat entered. Hé could not get out and was killed by Mr. Ferrand. This animal in getting to and into the Tae Raw Fatu.—The rain com . menced with a light sprinkle on Monday night, and by midnight increased to a heavy rain which continued until nearly day-light. The rain-fall up to 9 o'clock yesterday morning, as shown by the guage at the office of the South Yuba Canal Co. was 1.45 inches. The rain fell-almost constantly yesterday. farmers need to condition the ground for ploughing. AccipeNt,—On Monday night as Hon. E. W. Roberts was returning home to Grass Valley, his horse fell, near the toll house, and he received a severe. bruise upon the knee which for a time Was very painful.
