Ye THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION.—
SUNDAY MORNING, NOV. 20.
California Liquors in Chicago.
The demand for California brandy
and wine israpidly incleasing~in~the}
East, and the better qualities. are much .
sought after. The interruption of preduction in Europe in consequence of
the ‘war will increase this demand, and
if shippers will send good liquors to
Eastera markets California will be-.
come the chief source of supply. The
business will become very profitab‘e.
J.J. Ott, of this city, infornis us that
his brother at Chicago purchased a
large quantity of California brandy at
Sacramento, paying $225 per gallon.
The freight to Chicag> was 35 cents
per gallon in currency, and he sold
one half the lot at the depot in Chicago
for $5 00 per gallon in currency. He
could have-sold the whole at the same
price, bat preferred to hold for better
ratesoHe-has senton another order,
and feels confident that the demand
for California liquors will be still better. When Nevada county has a railroad to Colfax the wine interest will be
rapidly developed: We can produce .
finer table wines than any locality in
the States. The clarets which have
been made here are pronounced equal
to Chambertin ‘or Burgandy by connoiseurs, and such wines as these, are the
wines which will be most sought after.
This locality is bound to be a large
producer.

A GERMAN experimenter has lately
discovered the method of producing
the celebrated Chinese gold lacker, his
imitations being entirely successful. :
His method of preparing this-substance
is to melt two parts of copal and one}
of shellac, so as to form a perfectly
fluid mixture, and then add two parts
of hot boiled oil. The vessel is then to
be removed from the fire and ten parts
of oil of turpentine gradually added.
To improve the color. an addition is
made of a solution in turpentive of
gum gutta, for yellow, and dragon's
blood for red. These are to be mixed
in sufficient quantity to give the de.'
sired shade, The Chinese apparently
use tin foilto form a ground, upon
which the lacker 1s laid.
A BLANDER case was recently concluded at the Ontario, Canada, County
Assizes, in‘which Miss York sued her
step-father, Thomas King, to recover
damages for haviog prevented her marriage with Dr. McKay, of Beaverton,
by concocting a story which seriously
roflected on her character as a virtuous
woman. In the course of the trial it
waa proved that King had made a
proposition of marriage to her himeelf,
and that he had willfully slandered
her sa that she might be driven to ac.
cept him, The jury found a verdict
for the plaintiff, and assessed the dam
ager at $500.
Waeerer Cramms.—We visited the
works of this company at Randolph
Flat yesterday, says the Grass Valley
Union of Satarday. A shaft is now
being sunk to work the lead they have
been so fortunate in striking, and preparations are being made to place ma
chinery on the ground at the earliest
possible moment. On the Coombe and
Grant claims a tunnel is being run for
draining purposes, and the prospect
ahead of both componies, as well as
some’ others of the Squirrel Creek
Gains, is good fora remunerative seasen a8 S00n as water can be obtained
for washing. er

In accordance with usage, Thursday,
the day.of. November,.A. D. 1870,
is hereby set apart as a day of thanks~
giving and ‘praise to Almighty God for
. the blessings of the past year.
The people of the State are recomsanctuaries on that day and make suitable acknowledgment of tlie Divine
goodness which has been experienced
by them asa co2munity and as indi. viduals during the year about to close.
While expressing our obligations for
past blessings, let us not fail also to remember that no evidence of gratitude
isso acceptable to the Supreme Being
as that which is manifested by obedience to His laws. It is righteousness
alone which “exalteth a nation, while
sin is a reproach to any pegole ee
In testimody whereof, I have hereto
set my hand and caused the great seal
this 16th day of November, a. D. 1870.

Attest—H. L. Nichols, Sec. of State.
A cuURIoUS petition has been presented to Queen Victoria, signed by
more than 2,500 women and girls employed in the art of bookbinding,.setting forth the great loss and privation
they suffer by the stoppage of the
trade in the prayer books and church
services in consequence of the withdrawal of the Table of Lessons bill last
season. They. pray. Her Majesty to
cause it to be introduced into Parlia
ment at the earliest possible moment.
Toe New York Mail says: The
North German Correspondent speaks of
the construction of a railrved five German miles long, nearly twenty English
miles, in the space of five weeks, as an
event perhaps unprecedented in the
Fannals of engineering. This is a mistake. In our war there were dozens of
instances in which this feat was excel
led. Gen. Sherman had a construction
corps which more than once built a
‘mile of railway, including bridges, every day, for days in succession,
JacoB ScHLANCH, of Lansing, Mich.,
recently received $1,400 from the sale
of land in New York. The possession
of so much money rendered him insane, and, after hiding neatly the
whole amount, he committed suicide
by hanging. The money has not yet
been found and Schlanch’s family is in
a destitute condition.
THE State of Missouri commenced
suit a few daya ago, against the State
National Bank for the recovery of
$363,910 with’ interest, amounting in
all to over $600,000. The suit. is.
brought on the ground that the bank
is the legitimate successor of the old
State Bank of Missouri, inwhich the
State owned.a large interest.
A FEW nights since an Illinois clergyman, who had been routed out of

a young couple from the rural districts,
so far forgot his calling as to beat the

with a etick, as goon as he discovered
that the blundering young tellow had
