Dastardly Attempt to Murder. .
A most dastardly attempt was made
to take the life of J.L. Holland, Super-:
intendent of the Erie mine, on Sunday evening last. He left this city
on Sunday for the mine, in his buggy: :
and ew about one mile from Suow
Point, ‘at 8 o’clock in the evening, a . :
man stepped trom behind a tree and
commanded him to stop, ,at the same
time grabbing the reins.of the horses, . ’
stopping them almost . instantly. —
Mr. Holland, not liking the idea of . '
ong
eae —being—rebbed~without—some—resis-+—
tance, ‘pulled. the whip out of its sock.
et and struck the horses,
ing to. get away; but. finding .it im.
possible, he struck the robher a. most
powérful blow over the head with the’
tha-butt end off his whip;. hehav-.
ing come up close to: the: buggy. —
As soon as Holland struak him, the .
would-be-imurderer said,. -“‘I’ll . kill
you,”’ and shot atMr. Holland. The
ball passed through his ceat on the
left side.and burned a. little of his
vest. As soon as the shot was tired
the horses became frightened: ‘and ran
away,.and by this: means Mr. Holland.escaped. He says the man was
of medium size and masked. Holland is confident the man,has got his.
brand on him, as he struck him with,
all his might on the head or forehead:
and thinks he can be detected in this.
way. While in this city, Mr. Hol; we land had. considerabla. money paid.
Shim, and he is of the opinion that. it
musthave been known to the assassin, ithe robben had succeeded in
being master of: the situation, he
would have got buttery little money,
as Holland had only sifficient to pay
his expenses along. the rdad. We
hope the: villain will, be ony ad
and dealt: with as he deserves, . >

Serious Acgident.
~ Chalmers, a coal burner, reBeal at French: Corral, while engaged at his work on Tuesday, being thirsty, proceeded to the tunnel
of V. G. Bell’s mining. claims, near
by, to get a drink of water froma
spring some distance inside the tunnel, While in the act of drinking,
the car, loaded with dirt, came rapidly towards him, and before he had
time to get up out of the way, the
¢ar struck him a . heavy blow on the
tight thigh, causing a compound
fracture.
this city yesterday morning, and
conveyed to the county Hospital,
_ where everything that ‘could be was
done for the suffering man by Drs,
Hunt and Welch, in order, if possible, to save the leg, although it is
feared, amputation will be necessary.

In the Wyoming mine, on Deen
Creek, which has bean purchased by.
Messrs. Gunn and, Blaikie, of San.
Francisuo, they have struck a rich.
vein of, specimen rack. We saw some
‘of the specimens last evening whiah.
were taken out on. Monday, and it is
the same character of quartz, and
the speciniens are almost us rich,as
those taken from the John Schmitt
