Such a road ‘to the Bay, and both freight and*travel _A Roap WANTED.—Since the destruction of Hoit’s bridge, the pesple-of Sweetland and vicinity have no means ef communication with this city, except by way of} San Juan, and nearly all the trade of that prosperous mining vicinity has been transferred to Marysville, and goods are freighted a distance of forty miles. The grades on the reads across the Yuba are so heavy that itis almost impossible to get a load over them. The trade of all the ridge, from San Juan to French Corral, one_of thé most prosperous mining sections of the county, should come. to.er through this city, and that it does not, is wholly owing to the fect thatthe roads are such that freight can be more easily hauled forty iniles from Ma-. _ rysville than it can ten or twelve from . Nevada. In addition to this trade, by the construction of good roads a large proportion of the. travel and freight of Sierra county could be brought through this couhty.— We gre informed that by following the course ‘of Rush Creek to the Yuba, and a ravine running from the other side to French Corral, an excellent road, of easy grade, end not more than ten or twelve miles, might be built to the-Ridge. Other routes . have been also suggested, and if they offer one half the advantages that is claimed fur them, some one should be selected and tke would give the most direct route for Sierra, the eastern portion of Yuba, atid the Ridge, would be secured beyond a doubf& THE NEw DistTrRict.—The prospectors in the new mining district recently discovered beyond Montezuma Hill, have the most flattering indications. The Mountain Rose ledge has been prospected to the depth of fifteen ortwenty feet: The rock taken at contains alarge amount of free gold and rich sulpburets. Other ledges in the same vicinity, though they havenot been prospected to such an extent, look equally as well. The storm has interfered with prospecting in the District to some extent, but in the spring many new and rich ledges will be opened. Those interested are in high hopes and are determined to develop their cluims asearly as: possible. _ ry Benind Time.—The cars did not arrive at Colfax yesterday until 12 o’clock, and the stage did not arrive in this city in consequence untilabout 4 o’clock. We are informed that the delay was. caused by the the embarkments which ‘were thrown up The banks along the deep cuts are beginning to cave off, and the cars get along very slowly. The damage done by the storm, to the road will soon be repaired. Tue KaTe Hayves—The Kate Hayes quartz mining company located near Grass Valley have sunk: their incline to the depth ofene hundred’feet and have commenced the ereetion of machinery for hoisting and pumping. They will put up a thirty-horse power engine shortly. The works will cost about $8,000, Tue Roapds.—The roads leading out of the city are exceedingly muddy rendering wheeling very difficuit. The stages from all points arrive several hours later. .than usual and a large amount of freight for merchants in this city remains at Colfax awaiting transportation. — Country Taxes.—i. T. Davenport, County Collector, has received during the} present month, $58,000 for taxes. He closed business on Monday night, and is now engaged in making out the delinquent list, which :the law requires him to return by the 1st of December. Those who desire to pay taxes now must wait upon the County Recorder. — . Grover & Baker.—The Traveling Agent of the Grover & Baker Sewing Machine Company, F. J.
