and two of the regues are in custedy.
It will be remembered that Wood's
store, on Mill street, was entered
from the front and robbed of $3,500
worth of cloth and some clothing
made up for customers. It was at
first supposed white men committed
the robbery, but it has since been
ascertained by Hank Dawley that
Ohinamen were the perpetrators.
He obtained information which led
to the arrest ef Ah Quoy, and DawJey and another man brought him to .
Nevada and took him down Deer
reek, where the goods were supposed to be concealed, but all their
efforts failed t induce Ah Quoy to
tlt anything. He ‘‘no sabe”’ all the
time. They had him tied up ino
tunnel, securely as they supposed,
and were hunting for the goods. On
itheir return Ab Quoy was gone. On
last Thursday officer Snow arrested
him the secend time and worked
with him several days but without
avail. Qn Monday Snow, Dawley,
and Jones, who had for several days
been working the matter up, again
started te work.’ They took the
Chinaman with them and went some
three miles down Deer creek, making thorough. search, but without
success, They reached Grass Valley towards night, and determined . .
tomake one more effort to compel
the Chinaman to confess the crime.
They took him out in the woods and . .
’ after giving him an expérimental
knowledge of the sensation in‘hanging in a new form, he consented and
led them to a spot on Osbotne Hill,
where he told them the goods were

that it could he’a receptacle for stolen

from the bottom of the inclosnure a
drift ran off about twenty or twentyfive feet. A floor had been laid and
the goods were packed away in thig
drift. Only two piecés of cloth
were missing, and these Ah Qouy
acknowledged had been, sold, The
robbery was committed by seven or
