A POST NIE . . WOR IE ES AGAR PAGO MT SAON RTL POLE LTE TT LLL T TE LI, ILE RINE TSS ET IEEE SECO BRE OE tte STEN I STAD a . rr oder ts eae af, e She Daily Tennscript. NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA. COUNTY & CPTY OF FRICIALPRESS = ‘SATURDAY, NOV. 24, 1866. From the Sacramento Union of yesterpay we obtain the following interesting tems: The Western Union Telegraph ‘Company has completed and opened a new line, which runs by way of Denver, Bridger’s Pass and the stage route now traveled. This second line is said to have been constructed in a superior manner, and it is ex‘pected that the stoppages of communica‘tion by telegraph with the Atlantic States will be ides fféiptent than was the case while we had but one line. = A new arrahgement has been made for the transmission of .the Overland mail. The mail will go from New York to Chicago, instead of to St. Louis, and thence " ‘pase through Iowa and over the Union Pacific Railroad to the terminus of that track, where it will be transferred to stages. ' The financial panic continues in New York. Wall street isexcited. Numerous failures are reported. Credit is sadly ‘shaken. Money is hard to borrow. The journals attribute the trouble to the action -of the Treasury Depart ment in selling both gold and five-twenties. The panic extends to other cities and causes the depression of From Washington we learn that the President is so busy in preparing for the meeting of Congress that he cannot receive applicants for office, which is vexation of spirit tothe hungry. General B. §. Alexander, long in command of the defenses of Washington, is coming to San Francisco to superintend the construction of docks. Admiral Dahlgren is going to assume command of the South Pacific squadron, A dispatch from Murphys, Calaveras county, says the deperado who murdered ‘ William Ritter, -in Sacramento county, July 2d, 1865, was overhauled and killed by Constable Jordan and possee, about three miles from that place, Thursday morning. The murderer refused to sur render, und fired upon the Constable, and ‘was then shot dead. Henry Baker, one of the inspectors of cigars and tobacco, has been removed.— He received notification on Wednesday to pass over his stencil plates, ete., to Collector Soule. , A Sacramentan, who contemplates vis , ting Washington and Paris soon, received per has e&tered upon its fourth volume.— In “ite semi-canual talk to its readers,” it says :° “What was started as an experiment has proved ftself.a partial. success ; and omy. The editor has had to abandon his quid and his pipe to make both ends meet ; and the total expenditures for drinks by him and his partner during the year that they have been in business together, only amounts to three dollars and seventy-five cents, and that was mostly spent by the editor to keep from being “chivereed !”.— And, to tell you the truth, neighbor. mer chants, it is not doing exactly’ the fair thing for you to have so much of your printing done, for the cheapness of it, in San. Francisco.” The merchants of Carson ought to be ashamed of themselves, sending to the Bay for their printing. That’s what we call “small potatoes and few in a hill.”— The Appeal is the best paper ever published in Carson, is loyal to the core, done more to keep the town of Carson up, and deserves every dollar expended for printing. It would be a capital idea for the people requiring any kind of goods, inthe line of those sending abroad ‘for printing, to throw off on that class of merchants, and they will soon become wiser if not better men. 5 PorTicalL, READINGS.—We_ sincerely hope our people will turn out in large numbers this evening, to listen to the entertainment to be given by Miss Eliza A. Pittsisiger, the well-known poctess, at the Brick Church. Every town this excellent lady has visited she has been greeted with good audiences, and we trust she will meet with the same reception here. No lady has ever come among us so highly recommended by the press and leading . men of the State as Miss Pittsinger. Read the following opinions of the press: PoETICAR READINGS.—Miss Eliza A. Pittsinger, the talented Poetess of the Pacific coast, gave one of chaste Entertainments at the Metropolitan Theatre last Tharsday Evening, which transcended anything of the kind we have yet been permitted to hear on this coast. « Miss P., has but few, if any superior in the art of Eloctition..The “Yankee Ballad,” and “March to Moscow” ~~ the audience in aroar of laughter. “Poe’s Raven” was delivered in an-exceedingly impressive and tragic manner, but by far the grandest feature of the Reading was her own magnificent poems,.“Give us Back Our Dead,” and “The Eagle,” which shows her wonderful command of language.—Sun. Miss PITTSINGER.—This distinguished in reply to a late communication, inal footee is announced to give a Dramatic e ing as to the rates of passage, the foléw‘ing statement of prices from the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's agency at San Francisco : : The first cabin ticket to St. Nazaire and return to San Francisco costs $495 80, exclusive of railroad fare, which is $50.— First cabin fare from New York to Liver: ss Cunard Line is $132 50; Inman $80. Fare from this city to New York by steamer of the 30th inst. is, first . cabin, outside, $232 50; inside, $182. : SINGULAR CasK.—When Mr. Fagan’s little girl died, a short time since, poisoned by mistake for quinine, says the Belleville, Il. Advocate, her little brother Johnny had a similar prescription put up for, him. He remarked to Mr. Winstanly, “Unele, I don’t want to take that medicine, it killed sissy, and it will kill me.” “Oh, no,” said Mr. W., “it was not tlie medicine that killed your sister.” The little fellow then replied : “May be not; but I wish. you would let mo see my pony before I take it, because I don’t believe I will ever see himagain.” He was shown the pony, took the medicine, and in one hour afterwards was acorpse, -Tue New York “Sevents.”—The foject of the New York “Seventh” iment visiting England and-France during the World’s Exhibition in Paris, is exciting a good deal of comment from the Eastern Press. The Philadelphia and Chicago journals ate making merry over it; aiid sonte other papers are sneering at the idea, that the “Seventh” should be’ jeted wht organization representative ofthe American soldiety. So faras raising money to pay the expenses of the trip is ‘eoncerned, the same sneering quill-drivers suggest that if any funds be raised at all ln connection! with tho Seventh,” i foginent 8 heme Whe Wess tase ey ading. We have had an opportunity to hear several of her pieces and been surprised at the excellence of her elocution and her conception of dramatic propriety. Her entertainments consists of Recitations’ —not Readings ; she depends on memory solely, and the text is accompanied by ail the adjuncts of gesture and expression usual onthe stage. Miss Pittsinger’s rendering of her own poem, “Give Us Back Our Dead,” and Pue’s “Raven,” is especially fine—the latter the best that we have heard in this country. It is grand, classic and dramatic in the highest degree, and exactly in keeping with that remarkable composition. Her recitation of that poem, alone, will make a lasting impression everywhere, and will establish her reputrtion as a dramatic reader.—Flag. Express Bustness.—The Call says, there is no.reason why the postal service of the United States should not be equal to that of Wells, Fargo & Company’s’ Ex. press. Yet; the truth is, the former falls far behind the latter in efficiency as a letter carrier. Last year the Express in this State carried 2,800,000 ] for which the people were compelled t y. nine and one-half cents each—or an aggregate of $218,000 extra—as a tax for the inefficien. cy of the Government mails, for if the lattes were equal to the Express, the people would patronize them in-preference.° For the stamps used on ita envelopes, the Express Company paid to the Government $69,000. That is to say, the Gevernment taxed the Express Company that amount for the privilege of. performing service whichits agents “were ineapable of per forming.
