Ah Chung was on trial yesterday inthe County Court, charged with an attempt to commit rape on a little girl in this city, a@ short time Since. An attempt was made by the defense to. show that the Chinaman was insane. This is the same wretch who committed an assault on Mrs. Fairchild some time since. Getting Ready; At Sargent & Jacobs’ claims, at Quaker Hill, work is being pushed ahead with great rapidity, and ex: tensive preparations are being made for heavy work during the coming season. Last season these claims paid enormous profits to their owners, and the indications are that they will continue to yield handsomely for years to come. Manzanita Claims. We are informed that the Manzanita Company, whose gravel claims are near this tity, have cleaned up this season over $60,000. The Company are now engaged in running a powder tunnel. We did not learn how much. powder they propose using in the blast. Turkeys. Turkeys are selling in Marysville at 1534 cents per pound. Quaint old Burton has favored us with an ‘Anatomy of Melancholy,” but who shall dissect the melancholy fallacies and fibs with which knaves and fanatics endeayor to delude the sick and feeble of this generation, Charlatans, through the newspaper press, recommend to the strengthless victim of disedse convulsing purgatives which, if taken, are sure to turn his debilitated system almost inside out, and sink him into the uttermost depths of helplessuesg and despondency! ¥anatics, on the other hand, assure the prostrate patient that no medicine containing a diffusive stimulant onght to pass his lips. If he elects to be guided by the advice of impostors.and lun tics, let him make his will and order his coffin; butithere is a spark of common sense in his composition, let him resort in his extremity to Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, the most potent of vegetable tonics and alteratives—the purest and most entirely wholesome of medicated stimulants. The wonderful cures of dyspepsia, biliousness, rhumatism, physical prostration and malarious fevers which this rare ‘specific has effected during the last twenty-two years, are the most conclusive answers that . can be given to theenemies of mankind who offer volcanic catharics as tonics, and to the mistaken beings who would refuse a medicipal stimlant to a poor, broken-down invalid, who is! literally dying by inches for the want of judicious stimulation, Temperance, properly understood, countenances no such folly as this. The State lews enacted to put down the abhorrent vice of drunkenness, provide for, the sale of brandy whisky, and other liquors as medicines; and if these adultrated liquors of trade are accepted by temperence legislators as remedies, that ought to be the general yerdict of the temperence public as regards the peer. less vegetable tonic based upon a stimulant absolutely pure.
