Casneau had an altercation with another named August Maureau, in which the former received an injury from which he died on Wednesday last. It appears from the testimony before the Coroner’s jury, that Casneauwent to the dwelling of Maureau under the influence of liquor, commenced abusing him and attempted to drive him from the house. A scuffle ensued in which Casneau was thrown by Maureau in such a way that his head struck against the door of a stove, and a h was cut in his temple about an ‘ow cal a half long. Proper attention was not given the wound, and lock jaw set. in, from which Casneau died as above stated. Justice L. B. Mallack acting as Coroner, and the jury returned a verdict that deceased came to his death from lockjaw, resulting from a wound accidentally inflicted by August Maureau, while defending himself against an assault in his own house. RancHES AND Mines.—The officers of the Land Office should exercise great care in the citation of parties in interest, where claimants have contests as to the mineral or agricultural character of lands. A number of cases have come up in this locality, and we are informed that in one instance a patent was issued to land for agricultural purposes, against the miners were never cited to appear, though they could be found at any time. This patent covers at least one set of claims which have been worked for years. The citation should not be entrusted to interested parties by the officers at the Land Office. It would be far better to place them in the hands of a reliable officer who would be sure to serve them. \ ’ Case oF Davip Norrif.—This case, in which defendant was indicted for attempt to commit rape, was called in the County Court yesterday morning. W. W. Cross appearing for the prosecution, and Judge Reardan for defense. The plea of ‘not guilty” previously entered was withdrawn, and the plea of a bar to this suit. The District Attor ney holding that under the law assault was necessarilly included in the crime charged, and the defendant having plead guilty and been fined for (assault a Justice’s Court, it was useless to £0 to trialand he therefore moved for a noe prosequi, which was allowed, and the defendant discharged. _ , OVERLAND MonTHiy.—We have received from the publishers the December number of this excellent magazine, and note among its contents the usual number of exceilent articles of local and general interest. The Overland is published the ist of every month by A. Roman & Co., San Francisco, at $4 per annum, and-now is an excellent time to subscribe. Copies may be obtained of Geo. R. Crawford in this city. THe ATLANTIC.—Crawford yesterday received the December number of the Atlantic Monthly, containing a large aumber of interesting articles, among them, “Uncle Sam’s Treatment of his Servants,” “The Mormon Prophet's Census.”. “In my Vineyard,” “Life Saving Duty as a Business.” Surerine Frurt.—Mr. Gould, of Santa Clara, has chartered # railroad car, at a cost of $1,200, and is now loading it with pears chiefly, of the finest varieties and of grand proportions, which are to be sent directly to New York.— On a similar venture, after paying $1,' Tue trial of McCracken for administering medicine for the purpose of producing abortion, to Miss Davis, will commence in the County Court to-day. Large Parers.—Crawford yesterday received an immense batch of Eastern Papers, magazines and pictorials. In California it seems possible that this desizable sub stitution may one day be accomplished. Certain it is, that the GREAT VEGETABLE TONIC is gradually displacing them, and that the confidence of the people in its sanitary and saving properties, increases with every passing year. ‘‘Figures that ean not lie,” show this to be the fact. No medicinal preparation enjoys the like popularity among all classes and condi. tions, in every section of the State.
