‘LOCAL ENTELLIGENCE
eeeMiss PIrrstncer’s READINGS.—The
weather permitting, Miss Eliza A. Pittsinger will give her readings at the Congregational Church this evening. Miss
Pittsinger’s poems have gained for her a
wide reputation, and she will read*several
of her best productions this evening. Her
poems are chiefly patriotic, and commend
themselves to all lovers of freedom. * “The }
Eagle,” written in the early stage of the
war is truly beautiful and prophetic. The}
. poems entitled “Land of Beauty, Land of
Gold” and “Give us back our dead” are
gems. Besides her own productions Miss
Pittsinger will read a number of selections
from the best authors. The entertainment.
will be excellent and we advise al -to attend this evening. .
THE Raw Fauu.—The rain fall up to
yesterday at 11 o'clock, according to the
guage at the office of the South Yuba Canal Company, was ‘as follows: the old
guage, 2.32; the Teynent guage, such as
is used in San Francisco, measured 2.86.
The variation of the two guages in the
last twenty-four hours of thé storm waé . ‘
24 of aninch. These. guages are placed
side by side and the result shows that the
rain fall in the mountains is even greater
than was supposed. The excess has been
80 great that many believed the measure
Went could not be accurate. The total fall
‘in this city duting the season, according
to Tennent’s guage has been 6.47.
MINING.—We understand that the recent storm gave the miners of Little York
Township sufficient water to work their
cement mills,“and that several will re.
sume operations this week. The supply
isnot yet sufficient for many of the hy:
draulic claims to. commence operations,
but a number of these will start soon. ‘We
hear from all parts of the county that an
unusual amount of this kind of mining
will be done during the present season.—.
We hope the storm will continue until
every locality is supplied with sufficient
Water for mining purposes.
RECRUITING.—Lieut. Porter has taken
charge of the recruiting office in this city
regiment which is being raised for the
regular army, on this coast. Men who
‘want to enter the service will now find an
‘opportunity todo so. The rendezvous is
in the Kidd & Knox building, corner: of
Broad and Pine streets. :
THe GazeTTE.—The Nevada Gazette
has again changed hands. The old proprietors have sold the entire establishment to our worthy County Assessor, E. F.
Bean, and although the’ new proprietor
and conductor of the paper has not declared “his policy,” we are confident that hereafter the Gazette will be true to the principles of the Union-party. No one who
is acquainted with the’ irrepressible na_ ture of the new proprietor, can question
his position. We welcome.our friend to
the fraternity and wish him great success
in his new enterprise. The paper of this
morning will no doubt fully explain the
intention of its new editor and proprietor.
THANKSGIVING Servicrs.—The Protestant churches of this city have made. ar
rangements for united services during the
present week, On Thanksgiving Day the
service will be held in the Methodist
Church, and the sermon will be preached
by the Rey. Henry ‘A. Wirt, of the Baptist Church.
Union prayer meetings will be held at
the Methodist Church on “Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, and at thé
Congregational Church on Tuesday and
Friday evenings. ‘In these services all the
congregations of the city will unite, and
all the people are invited to attend.
MILL STaRTED.—The mill of Garber &
Wear, on the old’ Blue Lead claim, at Red
Dog, started up yesterday thorning. The
‘the old breasts by hydraulic, leaving a
strata of cement about six feet deep, which
_ Will now be crushed in the mill. The
Stavel is rich, some of it prospecting as
high us six bits to the pan.
