CommerNEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA,
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,
SERENADERs.—A troupe of infatuated
serenaders on Thursday night, with a
discordant hand organ, the tones of
which were a, first-rate imitation of the
“steam whistle chorus” which distinguished ‘the railroad celebration, ranged
themselves in front of our domicile.
The wind; at the time, was blowing
like fury, and it was so cold that the
notes.of the ergan would occasionally
freeze and make a sound something like
that emitted by the leaking of steam
from a cracked cylinder of an engine.
While one of the troupe turned the
crank in a style that would do justice to
; peregrinating Italian, the other menibers stood about him, endeavoring by
dancing to keep up a circulation, while
their teeth chattered with such vigor
that the listener might imagine Ben.
Cotton in his “bone accompaniament.”
It would have been mucli easier to have
done this than to imagine that there
was any “harmony of sweet sounds” in
that organ. A Chinese fiddle and gong,
and a dozen cats with tails tied together
and thrown over a pole, would have
been an improvement on the music, and
we suggest these instrumental accompaniaments the next time our serenading friends desire to inflict a moonlight
serenade upon their friends,
‘Leoi.ators.—Miles P, O'Connor,
~Senatog elect, has taken up his quartersin Sacramento, at the Golden Eagle Hotel. Hon, T. A. Slicer, Assemblyman elect, passed through this city a
day or two since on his way to the
Capital. Hon. Sam. F. Outes, Assem™
blyman elect, who by the way will
take his mark in the halls of legislation, will leave ina day or two. Sam
has a brilliant future before him, if he
sees fit to take advantage of it. Oates
is as competent to become Speaker of
the House as several of the candidates
mentioned in that connection.
t fj
AnovT To Start AGAIN.—The Pennsylyania Company, near this city, which
has-not been worked for about two
years, we understand, is about to be
started up again. When this quartz
lead was struck, and for a long while it
paid the owners handsomely, Whether .
the company now propose to resume
work on the old ledge, we are not informed, but it is the general belief that
the celebrated Nebraska lead runs
through these claims.
County Court.—Yesterday the case
of Henry McCrackin, charged with an
‘an attempt to produce abortion upon
Clara Davis, was on trial. The forenoon was mostly occupied in completing the jury panel, and the afternoon
was consumed in the examination of
witnesses. The case will probably be
. completed to-day. W. W. Cross appears for the prosecution and Judge
Reardan and Dibble & Byrne for the
defendant.
aie
A CHANGE.—We stated a few days
ago, on the authority of Messrs. Lobner & Irving, that they would. discon.
tinue the forwarding business on the
30th of this month. In a letter received
from them yesterday they state the
business will be continued as hereto
fore, by Mr. Lobner. Mr, Irving with~ draws from the firm on the Ist of De
cember.
EpiscopaL Cuurcn.—We learn that
Rev, A. P. Anderson, who was recently
invited to the pastorship of the Grass
Valley and Nevada parishes, has accepted the call. He will commence his labors at once, by preaching in Grass.
. Valley on to-morrow, Sunday morning,
and in this city in the evening.
THE Trustees for the Rocky BarGold
Mining Company of Grass Valley, were
on Tuesday afternoon elected, as follows: George W. Beaver, (President)
Thomas Findley, R. F. Morrow, (Treasurer) Gustave Dussol and Thos. Young:
R. Wegener was re-elected Secretary.
“You Ber.—From persons residing at
this lively town we learn that the prospect for business is better than it has
ever been before. It will not be long
before we hear of large quantities of
gold dust being taken out on that ridge.
. Vabuanie Doo. gentleman
'
this city who visited a ranch near Rough
about a well-trained dog they -have in
that vicinity. There resides on the
ranch a lady with several small children,
her husband being at work on the railroad over the mountains, who devotes
the most of hertime to the ranch. She
keeps quite a number of cows, chickens,
pigs, &. She also has a very large
savage looking bull dog, which never
goes ‘away from the house, except when
ordered, Every mbrning the lady goes
out and milks her cows, and they then
stray off to earn their own living,
During the day the dog watches over
the children and it as kind to them “as
a kitten.” At about 5 o’clock in the
afternoon the dog is commanded to go
after the cows. He starts off with an
air of great responsibility, and always
brings the cows to the yard. A new
cow that the lady bought did not appear to like the idea of being driven by
a dog, and concluded one day not to go.
The dog’s patience became exhausted,
and he bit her severely ; but that failed
to make the cow comprehend the situation, so, as a last resort, he took her by
the ear and. led her home, just the way
some brutes treat their children. It is
a noted fact that when the dog makes
his appearance now the new cow comes
rght along with the others, without
further questioning the dog's right or
ability to boss her. The dog never
allows a man to come on the premises
7 without watching him very closely, and
it would not do for any one to touch
the children or anything else about the
house. Not long ago a Mexican started
to go to the house quite late in the
evening, and the dog went after him,
and would probably have killed him
lad not the lady called him off. That’s
a dog worth having.
