NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA.
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
EXAMINATION OF JoHN Haniy.—
Yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, John
Hanly, charged with the killing of
Walter Lane was examined before Justice Deal. ‘The testimony was substan. )
tially the same as given before the Coroner’s jary, except that the imminent
danger of Haaly at the time he fired the
-ehot was more fully shown. It was al‘so shown that the object in following
lane was to see that he went by the
residence of the Cleaves brothers, and
that Hanly went at the request of the
owners of the house. The testimony
showed clearly that Lane was from fifty
to one hundred feet from Hanly when
he commenced to advance, and that at
the time Hanly fired Lane was within
fifteen or twenty feet with pistol raised.
W. W. Cross cgndacted the prosecution and A. A. Sargent the defence.—
After the examination Hanly was discharged on the ground that the homicide was justifiable and in necessary
self defence.

delivered by Rev. A. Parker. The day
and evening were quietly and happily
passed, and all felt better for the rest
from labor. Such holidays are calculated to greatly benefit our bustling
