SSSR . SRC RIE PR ae . The Daily Transcript, Wednesday, November 28. 1877, mM, 'e is our only authorized Agent in onto: He will receive Advertisements and Suhagriptions ‘for the TRanscariptT, and receipt for us in ~ oar name. This was caused by the meceggary attendauce of many of the papils upon eharch services. The schools are very full, yet they are running /The Board is doing all it can to supply more rooms, and at the same tine not put any unnecessary tax apon the people © The: schouls. will continue tor foar weeks more, -when they will close for tue Lolidays. We hope the friends of education, and especially the patrons of our schouls, will. manifest sufficient interest in the welfare of their, children and wards, to visit the several schools and see for themselves whe her they are receiving that attention which they demand to prepare them for social and business life. In view of the abuve, we are more foroibly ioapressed than ever of the soundaess of tue prlicy sugge-tsd by a resolution introduced by Senator ‘Maxey, of Texas, not-many Jays since, instructing the Comm:ttee on Military Affairs (> inquire iuto the expediency of con-te citing defensive works on the Rio Grando frontier of the United statey. It would require no keen perception to enuvle a seeker after facts to understand that the facilities which Mr, Maxey bas ebjoyed through an extended residence in a territory coptiguous to the scene referred to, and which bas given him the advantiges of personal observution, eminently fit him for sugyesting some remiedy for the chronic antagonism to fixed institutions which seems t» be a purtand parcel] of every Mexican's characteristics, The experience of our Guvernment with these people jbas been of a peculiar nutare. For instance, we read some three or four months since of 9 case wherein a baud of renegades resctted from the Starr county, Texas,. jail two prisoners confined thercin, In accomplishing this feut, the j silor, his wife and the county atiuorney were shot down by the sasuilunts. ‘The outlaws immediately songt.t an asylum within the coutines of Mexico’s borders. The order subsequently issued by President Diaz for the restoration of the murderers to -our authorities was entirely ignored by the Mexican officers, who openly expressed their utter disregard for the piinciples whick bad resulted in au extradition treaty. This is only one of many similar instances where our struight-haired neighbors have taken vceasion to manifest their supreme .contempt for Uncle Sam's power. Bot until receiving information of the issuance of his last order, we had regarded President Diaz as anxious, for the sake of policy, if nothing more, to maintain a compurative ttate of peace between tho tro nations, although everything went toiudicate bis helplessness in putsuing such a course, owing to the instability of the race over which his sceptre should properly sway, and their indifference td hisauthority. Now that he, too, has openly avowed his position to be hostile, it stands our Government in hand to take such measures as will ‘emphatically teach these stirring revolutionists a lesson that will not be soon forgotten, concerning its ability and consequent inclination to maintain the respect due to so great a nation, It is now 8 question of thesapremacy of either the United States or Mexico: ’ The only way to solve the problem in our favor, is to so protect the frontier ’ that the “‘Greasers’”’ may have some tangible evidence of the power with which they have been so many years cdquetting, and thus be led to appreciate the advisability of maintaining & more respectful demeanor hereafter, chee — eee : Grand Ball on Thanksgiving Evening. On Tursdsy evening, Nov. 29th, Messra, Muller & Beckeit will give a grand social ball at Hunt's Hall, tor which we bespeak a fair share of pat. . Tomage from the amusement-loving public, A ful: orebestra has been secured to discourse sweet music, and amongst the geutlemen comprising the committe are some of Nevada's leading citizens. Ah enjoyable evening may be expected for the partici-. ° papts, In case f the weuther proying unfavorsble, carriages will be provided by the management, 183 ; boys enrolled, 88 ; girls enrotled, } Tact which is evident to all, that nol. person will allow amything of a secular character fail-trom want of ate tention. The cow, the -bor-e, the Sheep aud even the hog will receive their proper attention, but the chil‘dren, anybody cafi care for them— the children whom we love, ay our own lives,.and for whom we would be willing to make any sacrifice tor their good. ‘The parent thinks if he cares for the wants of the budy, any one may look after the’moral and inteHectual culvere of his children. There is not a parent but desires to see his child grow up and be prepared-to take an honorable position in society, but does he manifest that interest which he ought, to prepare him tor it? I wieh the parents o the community would: consider the most important interegt of their children—a good moral and thoroughly intellectual culture. His father was a distinguished French politician anda naval commander, and bis mother a beautiful Corsican lady.. But she died young, and little Owen went with bis father to serve in a war vessel, He was made midshipman, and at thé early age of ten participated with his father in the battle of the Nile, The ship caught fire during the action; and Captain Cassabianca, wounded, was lying insensible on the deck, while the brave boy, unconscious of his father's fate, held his post at the battery. The flames raged round him ; the crew fled one by one, and urged the lad to do the same; but he refused to desert his post, and fought on until the whole ship was flaming.
