Before another issue of the Traxscriprreaches many ef ‘tr readers, the-vérdict of the Amentan people will have been-rendered. * The -election takes place on néxt Tuesday. “Lhe time for earnest action is at hand. Republicans in this fight should be satisfied with nothing short of a.com-’ plete victory. Let Republicans go to work for the entire ticket. The Congressman ‘fs 4s important as the electoral vote: . It #¢ the duty of Republicarts and Democrats to rebtkke the} renegade who-lefi. the party mainly ‘for the spetls. The charges against ‘the Republican candidate have all peen mef and ‘réfuted,; and Pege -today stands as ‘a mau, wofthy of support, and infinitely above his compet‘itor, Coggins, in whose interest he was assuiled. In California this campaign has not been as exeiting as Présiden elections usually are, and although both. par= ties have been active, there have been tions'‘than former elections. 'While the signs of the times indicate the teelection of “President Grant, and his epponents are neatly -to admit. that fact, it is highly important t! that every -. one ‘of his supporters should do all in his power to secure a victory beyond a possibility of doubt. California will give a large majority for Grant, provided Republicans all turn cut, and the fact that the opposition are not defer any Republican from doing . his whole duty. It is also of the greatest importance "that every Republican vote should be brought out so that our candidates for Congress may be elected by the usual Majorities. No Republican will dispute the necessity 6f having-a’Congress in fall sympathy with the Ad‘ministration. Our opponents having given up all hopes of electing their President, are devoting their whole energies to the election of their candidates to Congress. To secure the their electorial ticket. and-they pre-. tend to have strong hopes that by evidence of sach men as Senator Mc. .) means they. will succeed. In this district, especially, corrupt influences have been brought to bear to defeat the regular candidate of our paity, Mr. Page. Charges totally false have been persistently reiterated concernisg him, and every effort has been made to break him down before . the people. Tie Sacramento Union, which oe lately 16: itself up-as the dictator of the Republican party. and assumed to name its candidates or else defeat . them, has pursued Mr. Page with a qaalignancy and spite seldom witnessed, and although his past record and present professions fully agree, and show that he is as reliable upon . questions of local interest'as his opponent, Mr. Coggins, he is continually misrepresented and maligned. We hope Republicans of ‘this district will not be deceived in this matter, or influenced to withhold their support from the regularly and honestly nominated candidate of the party on account,of.the.slanders that hayebeen made and circulated against him.. Mr. Bage is far superiot to his opponent im all those qualities necessary to-fithim for the position to which he aspires; he is'a warm supporter of the present admfnistration, and will, if elected, do all in his power to advance, the interests of ". the avowed enemy of the present administration, unfriendly to_ its poliey» and, if in’ Congress, would array Himsé'f with the enemies: of the Republican party . and would consequeatly placé himself im a position where He “bald be of little benefit te his'oduistitherits: He isa man Of a single idea and possessed Of none,of the qualifications, necessary .to make him «useful representative ‘of the. people of this district..There -is not-#’single valid reason why any true Re blica should refuse to report Page while there are innumerable reasouis wh Ogee egy be defeated. ove ws “14 beatin Oct,., ‘iu the doay'¢ of'a man, covered oniy with an undershirt, was found floating-in the riyer near the fod of 'T street.. At ber of Democtats who will vote for Grant, Wilson and Page, There are a number of men in the county whe will not vote *#t ‘all at this election. It is evident already. that 9 party rwhich basely deserts principle and: abandons itg trae‘and tried ‘leaders office, had been-itsmost bitter enemies, cannot get the support of any. class of American citizens,. True and fidelity to principle even in an enemy, and fur this reason the truest men to Democratie principle are determined to make the defeat of the so called Liberals overwhelmning. This is why so mgny Democrats ‘are supporting Grant, Wilson and Page. 2 Price of Wood. j The “Union” is trying to persuade the people of Sacramento that Coggins will reduce the price of wood in that. city, if elected to Congress. This is a new issne in the canvass aud we should like to;have the ‘“‘Unon’’ explain how it is going to’ be jens. We are paying in this s city $6 per cord for wood that we bought for $4 two years ago, but we can’t see exactly how Coggins could effect the market if he wént to Congress. We should not be surprised before election to heat the friends of Coggins claiming that he will do away with the necessity for food and fuel if elected to Congress, Judging from what we have seen and heard of Cog-. gins, we should say his ability is rather over rated. We do not think he could begin to testore the forests that have been burned and ‘make wood as abundant as it was two or three years ago, even if the ‘‘Union’’ tells us so. Coggins. Coggins, who claims to be an antisubsidy man, -voted for the bill to rob-Plumas county of $290,000 and he does not. deny it, Coggins says he don’t know how he veted in the Legislature. He may not-remember how to: vote in Congress should he get there. Every Democrat.who repudiates the Greeley movement-should vote against Coggins, who is a Greeley man and a candidate upon the Baby ¥ Varden ticket for Congress. Many Democrats who advocate principle in preference to policy will vote for Grant, ‘Wilson and Pugé, ean. Notwithstanding the fac that’ the New York Tribune has. retracted “‘in’ the’ fullest manner’’ its charges against Speaker Blaine, in connection with the Credit Mobilier, numerous Democratic: papers still persist in repeating the falsehood. » ‘Hoe Dis¥asz A singular hog disease is prevaling in Muscatine county, Towa.
