of the mines has left the surface
earth so dry that wet rot is no longer feared, and meanwhile ite more
cunning sister, the dry rot, is penetrating into every joint, joist and
rafter, not protected against it, just
as the teredo-worm honeycembs the
wharf piles in Pacific waters. This
morning Spiro was obliged to replace a section of the floor of his saloon, together with the cross joists
beneath. A heavy safe rested upon
the section and the sagging and
weakness were quickly detected.
The building and timbers adjoin the
International and date only from the
great fire, yet the cross joists are
just like honeycombs. Careful carpenters and housebuildere will hereafter lay no timbers upon the ground
without first soaking in sulphate of
lime and tar.
The New Telephene.
The Overland Telephone and
Telegraph Company using the Raxter telephone threatens to be a formidable rival to the Bell monopoly.
The instrument used by this compsby operates, says the Rochester Her‘ald, on the ‘“‘make and break” system, which not only differs from
that of the Bell instrament, but it is
claimed for it that it 1s far superior.
Its capital is $20,000,000 and the
capital of the sub companies already
organized aggregates $16,000,000,
Instead of renting the instruments
and receiving a royalty of about $20
on each set, as the. Bell company
does, the new company will license
the sub companies, and it is said the
tates charged subscribers for instruments will range from $1 to , $2.50 a
a month, or from $12 to $30 a year.
At such rates thousands will use the
telephone who now refuse to pay
the éxorbitant rates charged by the
Bell monopoly.
