WANTED IT OFF HIS Mtnp.—An

some thirty ye irs ago the father of
one of the members of the firm had
sold a yoke of oxen to a neighbor of

Friend had indorsed,-and he was
sorry,to add it had never. been paid.
He had now come: to tender the
am unt for which he had becomé responsible, and regretted that he was
unable to offer the interest also.
The member of the firm reminded
him that, as the note had long ago
become ontlawedana forgotten’ the
indorser was under no legal obligationto pay avything. But the
Quaker was determined to have the
thing off his mind, and. insisted on
an acceptance of payment,

Not AsHaMED or Work.—Two of
the most agreeable girls we ever met,
kept a grocery store — yes, and kept
it well, though they had been a rich
man’s ‘daughters, When that father
lost his wealth, and became a confirmed invalid did they sit down and
wring tbeir hands? Did they go
moaning all their days, begging men
toyive them a little sewing, a little
teaching, a little copying? Not they:
They began, in asmall way, to keep
a dry goods and grocery store, They
gave fair measure and right change.
They kept what people wanted; and
if unything was called for which they
had not, they put it down in the list
of their. purcheses, They had the
cleanest grocery for miles ‘around,
hired a clerk, bought a horse, built u
house, and are at this moment inde

Nor all Democratsare rebels, but
most of them are. The men who
sought to destroy the Union from
1861 to 1865 were all Democrats.
The keepers of prison pens were of
that partythen. All of.them that
are living belong to it now. The
leaders of the Fort Pillow, Poison
Springs and other massacres are
leaders in the Democrgtic party.—
Many of them a ein Congress. The
generals of Kentucky and Missouri
belong to that party. If Qaantrill
were alive he would, like Blackburn,
of Kentucky, represent some district
in the Confederate House. Those
who burn schoolhouses in the South
are Democrats. The oath-bound
assassins of they Kuklux and White
League inthe South are all Demvocrats,.and sure to vote for Tilden

New York City, the forgers of naturalization and tax receipt papers,
the-stuifers of the ballot-boxes;-the
men who robbed New York City ,of
$100,000,000 were and aré all Democrats. Not all members of that party belong to the grades alluded to,
but that party is the only political
organization in which they find shelter and’ éiicouragement,
Onr of the many new offices created by the last Democratic reform
Legislature was the State Land Commissioner, which gave a. place for
several lazy Democrats. This Commission has been in session four
months, and finally reports that they
have found a discrepancy of eighty
dollars in the accounts between State
Surveyor,General Gardner, and Secretary of State, Melone. The report
says; ‘The query suggests itself to
us what the State has done with the
money?’’ Eighty dollars is a good
deal of cush, and we suggést that the
Governor calls a special session of
. the Legislature and a committee of
inquiry be appointed: This Commission, like the Railroad Commission, is a great swindle upon the taxpayers of the State? In the common
