WEDNESDAY, NOV. 5, 1884. eS LOCAL AFFAIRS. — Monday Night’s Fire. The fire alarm shortly before 11 o’clock Monday night was occasioned by a dense cloud of smoke arising from the Broad street end of Naffziger’s pork packing establishment, and in » short time both fire companies were on the scene and ready for duty. The blaze started from the smoke-honse, the walls of the lower portion of which are eonstructed of brick work, with a space of about eighteen inches separating the _ masonry from the surrounding wood work, The sheet iron door to the fireplace had bevome red-hot, and the props holding it up had burned away, letting it fall partially out of position. ‘The fire had spread clear around the wooden enclosure of the brick walle, and run up into the frame apartment where the meat hung. There was a quantity of hay ~ stored in the loft of the building io which the smote-house occupies a corner, and a thin partition is all that separates this building from Graham’s livery stable. Had the fire obtained a little more start, the result would have been most disastrous, As it was, H. ¥. Reardan arrived with three Harden Hand Grenades before the firemen were ready to turn on a stream, and broke two in the space behind the fireplace, the wooden partition being afire over a large area, The gasses from the grenades extinguished the fire there in a twinkling, when he rushed the opposite side and broke one #0 "that its contents were scattered over the blazing wood work around the iron door, Immediately the fire there was subdued. At almost the same time a stream of water was turned inside the smoke-house by the firemen, and the fire there was soon out. There was about $600 werth of hams and bacon nearly cured, and a portion of the bacon was injured. The loss of meat and damage to the amoke-house will net be less than $300, according to the owner’s estimate, The building is insured. sa OR EL A Te TO IOE BOYD DRAMATIC COMPANY. ‘. gallery was occupied, and the downeeagnenee cence saan: bw nanemae A Big Audience on the Opening Night—Stronger Company Than Ever.. The management of the Nelli. Boyd Company must have felt highly complimented by the large audience that greeted them on the occas: ion of their fourth annual appearance at this city: Every seat in the stairs part of the house was nearly fall. The melodrama of ‘‘Solomon Isaacs” constituted the bill, and although it had been twice played here before, and a large portion ofthe people present had seen it at least once, it was 80 well enacted that it commanded the deep interest of all. Miss Boyd was of course the central attraction, and sotwithstanding the high degree of excellence with which she had per sonated “Kate Medland” in the past, Monday évening’s performance thatpart which shows she has not yet career, She is, if we can judge from a single illustration, better surported in most parte than during her previous visits. Ella Marble is a bright and pleasing actress, and possessed of more than ordinary dramatic force. Mr. Roberte (whose ‘Seth Preen” in “the Lights o’ London” first breught him conspicuously before the critical play-goers of the Coast) although apparently out of his regu lar line of business as ‘‘Mathew Thornton,” the hardened villain, showed marked improvement over his earlier efforts; and that he is fairly entitled to the reputation be has earned as an accomplished, versatile and painstaking actor. H. Loomis gave a quite acceptable rendition of “Gilbert Medland,” but b:fore the week has passed we expect. to see him in other parts for which he is better fitted. Mr. Marble, who has the reputation of being a most admirable comedian, and wasal:o somewhat out of his element in the peculiar character of ‘‘Isaacs,” created a vast fund of amusement by his eccentricities, All the other parte were well played, and the performance as whole was strong. The silver cornet band and’ orchestra is by. great odde the best ever brought to this city by any theatrical troupe. Its selections are not only varied, but.are performed with a skill and an effect that captivates the dallestwas the best she has ‘given here in tism, Sprains, Burns, Galls, ‘Sc. Tom (better known out here as Soap”) McAlpine, who a few years ago fought Jimmie Rodda of this _ city at Storm’s Ranch below Grass Valley, is still in the field, as. the following telegram sent Sunday from St. Paul, Minnesota, shows: “ihe afternoon a party of abbut 100 people went by steamer about three miles down the Mississippi to witness a fight with hard gloves between John S. Barnes of thie city and Tom McAlpine of New York The men were of the same:height, 5 feet 8 inches. Barnes weighed 145 pounds and McAlpine 144. It was nearly four -o’clock when time was called. By consent of both parties the time of the rounds was made two minutes each under the Marquis of Queensbury’s rules, The fight was marked by cautious sparring for six rounds without either receiving punishment. When the _ seventh round began it was evident that Barnes meant. buainess, and he sent in a terrific swinging righthander which took McAlpine fairly over the right eye and he fell like o log, where he lay fully ten minutes totally unconscious. @n coming to he pulled off the gloves-and gave up. Rarnes did not receive a scratch.” RELL LET END A SLIT LE TOES The Overland. The experiment made by Miss Boyd in reducing prices of admission to 35 and 50 cents (reserved seats being on sale at Vinton’s for the latter price) is a most gratifying success. None of our citizens feel too poor to attend frequently, and a fall house is guaranteed for every performance, No Time Lost.
