coramon to hear an indiscriminate de/ gelves With the Church, do so upon cer~ tain conditions, and where such amuse. @.are seldom tirty treated ninety ry. From the pulpit it is ‘wunciation of ‘all kinds of amusement, ®tich ‘as theatre going, dancing, etc., -yand it is seldom we find a preacher who _ ‘alludes to such practices except in the "way of abuse.’ Now, it is of coursé understood that all who connect themments are pronounced by Church rules as wrong, members should not indulge in them. But that there is any wi¢kedness essentially associated with the dance or the play we do not believe, and if. instead of denouncing these. things indiscriminately, and abusing all who. indulge. in such amusements, the pulpit would endeavor to correct the evils which are in them, miich more ‘. expect to have them all’ worked overin . Tration 16° grinding pans, which work led alight ‘the mine is coftimencement, and . about two weeks. They have in opeover about 40 tons per day—and clean up from $1,500 to $1,800 a week. We are glad to hear it intimated that there are hopes of a resumption of work on this valuable lead next Spring. GoLpD Suiruanrs.—The shipments of gold dust by our banking houses during the past fifteen-days‘amounted to the sum of $125,000, equal to about three and a quarter millions a year.— We are informed by a gentleman who is posted up in these matters that the produce of-gold is far in excess of this amount, and will go nearer five millions than three. Sosays the Grass Valley Nationat. METEORIC. SHOWERS.—A correspondent of the Virginia 7respass, predicts that, on or about the 18th of November : ' Lowerot ba é “ most bitter terms the theatre, and after» James Tremuin and three others, all of » Whom work in the Heuston Hill mine, them HE era yea eee tetont ‘ Tram Grant School of Ouklnd ba ne good would beaccomplished. Wehave Known ministers to denounce in the ‘wards attend the opera of Lucretia Borgia, when we could not distinguish @ay merits which the opera possessed ever the play. The worldly minded people cannot understand the inconsis_ tency of preaching and practice on the “part of Church people, and the denun‘elation of thé ministry is becoming far leas ‘common than formerly. Eminent preachers are convinced that in order ¥ countéract évil they must endeavor to educate tlie moral #entiment, and Roacterd what they can’t destroy. We them new commending what is “fn wotldly. amusements and atto correct the evils which do belong tothem, Henry do more good by the wood” in the Ledthey ‘pure, the good and the beautiful, and if instead of ranting against the read-. decided. The returns will be eager-}ing of works of fiction, a better class of ‘works should be issued to supply the place of the “trashy stuff,” great good would be accomplished. We are glad that the Churches are beginning to view the matter in a common sense light, and we are satisfied that much good “will'bé the result. The character of worldly amusements dnd recreations imay be elevated, but human nature demands them, and man will have them, good or bad. It is therefore the best : to remove the evil in amuse“ments and retain the good. Danine CaBIN i daneeinhiient der Griffin gives us the particulars of the robbery of a cabin over at Heuston Hill, says the Grass Valley Union, on last Saturday afternoon between 2} and 4c’lock, ‘The cabin is occupied by two of the men working on each shift. At the change of shifte, between 3 and 4 o'clock in the afternoon, the cabin was etemcty: for léss than half an hour, and during this time the thief went to the cabin, where he found a watch dog _ Cheined near the door. The animal was _gtruck in the mouth, probably by a blow “from a slung shot, as three of his teeth were knocked out ; and this accomplish. ed, the thief broke open the door of the cabin, entered the building, stole two fine suits of clothing, one of which had been worn, together with $5 in. , and he then made’ his escape. n Stevens, living but a few fect from remuin cabin, saw the man going away, but not knowing that he was a ‘thief did not follow the fellow until it “Was too late to overtake him. Ture Legislatures of Michigan, Misméteors grand to behold, and tending greatly to establish the fact of their periodical return. The writer says that he was not disappointed.at the failure of this phenomenon last year, when it was generally expected. He says the grand meteoric displays of the past few centuries have occurred on or about the 18th of November, and exactly thirty— four years apart. He cites the occurrence of the phenomenon in 1799, and again in 1833, in support of his opinion. Admitting his theory to be correct, he says, “we may reasonably expect to behold on the 13th of November, 1867, a recurrence of the same sublime spectacle in the heavens which has so startled the world in years past.” EASTERN ELEcTIONS.—Elections were yesterday held in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan and Missouri for Governor and State officers. Elections were also held in New York,New of minor importance. In the latter State the woman suffrage question was ly ‘awaited by the » people of this State. AvrroR.—The projector of this institution annoiinces that it will soon be ready to fly. Tes. completion has been somewhat delayed fort the want of funds, but that difficulty has “been overcome, the apparent feasibility o taking being sufficient to b the money from the pockets of who are liberal enough to encoura science. ee For Minute CieRK.—C.
