Niles Searls, Supreme Court Commissioner, came up here
all the way from San’ Francisco last week just to get a good, square Democratic vote in. Now if there is one man who relishes a pleasant joke better than another, his name is Judge Searls. He enjoyed hiniself amazingly all of election day figuring out a victory for every Democrat from Dick Bartlett for Governor, and picturparty would be fluttened out when the news of their defeat camein. That night he went to bed early so asto be up’ with the sun and celebrate the victory in good style. By noon he could not for. ] the life of him figure out a sure majority for any Democrats but Dillon for constable avd Temple for Supreme Justice, with a bare chance for Bartlett. There was not much ground for a joke to be found in the situation, but he had the day before set his mind on having one, and have one he would. So he walked over to the telegraph office and sent to his friend Temple. a dispatch reading thus: oe We Democrats have carried Nevada county by a sa gee miujority of 400 or 500. ‘e managed, however, to get for you ubout 2500 votes out of 4000. 1 have concluded to stay over anothe: day and try to make the county unanimous for you. a Superior Court.
