NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA,
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
ROBBERY AT Grass ‘VALLEY.—On
last Tuesday night, about 12 o'clock,
the room of T. H, Harlan, in the Hotel
de France, Grass Valley, was entered
and robbed. of a silver hunting case
"watch, of American manufacture, to
which was attached a buckskin fob and
gold slide. A four barreled pistol, and
a small amount of coin was also taken.
a man was arrested, charged with
the-robbery, and his examination was
set for yesterday. It is stated that the
watch was offered for sale in this city
to-Carley & Beckman, McGuire and
_ others, and it is supposed to have been
disposed of to some one.
THE EUREKA SociaL.—The Eureka
Social Club of this city gave their first
party this season, at Temperence Hall
on Wednesday evening. The attendance though not so very large was
fair, and all present enjoyed a pleasmade by the Club that ceuld contribute .
to the pleasure of the guests. The .
floor was covered with an. entire irely new
canvass, which it a pleasure to
dance, while-the excellent music fur“nished by, Messrs. Blum, Maller, Engs
_< Tish and Carter, was splendid for danc~ .
ing, many of the pieces being new and
all of them executed in good time.
The Eureka have reason to eongratulate themselves upon the success of
their first tL Beny:
FIRE IN THE Woops.—For several
days past a destructive fire hasbeen:
raging in Lonis’ ranch, west of the Sugar Loaf. Yesterday a strong wind
prevailed, and the flames extended:
down the ridge, injuring and destroying
4 number of large trees. The origin of
this fire we do not know, but are informed that the underbrush is frequent=
ly set on fire by the Indians, as a means
of driving game to a small area; and
enable them to obtain it with greater
ease.
SoME Squasu.—We yesterday saw
“asquash, raised on Mulloy’s ranch, on
the. Red Dog road, which is a monster}
It measures seven feet and . vegatable.
eight inches, in its largest circumference, and six feet” in its. smallest,
weighing one hundred and twenty-five
pounds. It may be seen at Malloy's
store, on Commercial street.

received in this city, announces that’
Mrs. Frances M. Carter, an accomplish=
ed elocutionist, whose readings have
been highly commended by the press
and largely attended by the people of
San Francisco, will some time next
“week give our citizens'an evening with
the poets. Nevada has the promise of
abundant amusement and entertainment for some time to come.
THE Express Bustness.—It is reported that the Union Pacific Express
Co, will, after to-day conduct business
in connection with the new Pacific Ex»

Francisco, Many of the offices of the
Pacific Union, rumor has it, will still be
