H, Harlan, in the Hotel de France, Grass Valley, was entered and robbed. of a silver hunting case "watch, of American manufacture, to which was attached a buckskin fob and gold slide. A four barreled pistol, and a small amount of coin was also taken. a man was arrested, charged with the-robbery, and his examination was set for yesterday. It is stated that the watch was offered for sale in this city to-Carley & Beckman, McGuire and _ others, and it is supposed to have been disposed of to some one. THE EUREKA SociaL.—The Eureka Social Club of this city gave their first party this season, at Temperence Hall on Wednesday evening. The attendance though not so very large was fair, and all present enjoyed a pleasmade by the Club that ceuld contribute . to the pleasure of the guests. The . floor was covered with an. entire irely new canvass, which it a pleasure to dance, while-the excellent music fur“nished by, Messrs. Blum, Maller, Engs _< Tish and Carter, was splendid for danc~ . ing, many of the pieces being new and all of them executed in good time. The Eureka have reason to eongratulate themselves upon the success of their first tL Beny: FIRE IN THE Woops.—For several days past a destructive fire hasbeen: raging in Lonis’ ranch, west of the Sugar Loaf. Yesterday a strong wind prevailed, and the flames extended: down the ridge, injuring and destroying 4 number of large trees. The origin of this fire we do not know, but are informed that the underbrush is frequent= ly set on fire by the Indians, as a means of driving game to a small area; and enable them to obtain it with greater ease. SoME Squasu.—We yesterday saw “asquash, raised on Mulloy’s ranch, on the. Red Dog road, which is a monster} It measures seven feet and . vegatable. eight inches, in its largest circumference, and six feet” in its. smallest, weighing one hundred and twenty-five pounds. It may be seen at Malloy's store, on Commercial street. THE Youna Men's Socran Pe The remnant of this institution; furvivs ing the attack of “hymenia,” will meet at Wells, Fargo & Co’s. Carter, an accomplish= ed elocutionist, whose readings have been highly commended by the press and largely attended by the people of San Francisco, will some time next “week give our citizens'an evening with the poets.
