BEAN'S HISTORY AND DIRECTOBY OF-NEVADA COUNTY:
RROSPECTUS.—The size and fmportance of
Nevada oe the mining counties of Calinia; ite mines 0} yold of enormous product,
éclipsing all others in the world; its «xtensive
gravel ranges in which lies imbedded wealth to
enr.ch the nation; its thouvand ledges of goldbearing rock that stripe its territory, inviting the
capuial of other lands, and which are destined at
no distant day to cuuse its valleys and mountains to resound with the din. and clatter of machinery ; its fertile soil on which can be grown all
the productions of the tcmpérate zone; its perfect adaptability to the production of the generous wines that a eto rivat those of France or
Hungary ; its vast extent of surface that entices
the agriculturist ti. come and clothe its hill-sides
with orchards aud vineyaid=; its nearness to the
Great Pacitic Railway, rendering it accessible to
the commerce and travel of the world, and the
attention it is attracting among the scientific.
and moneyed circies of the globe. ali -these
would seem to call for some compendious
exhibit of its boundless resources, ite products and its prospects. Impressea with this
idea. and cheered by the encouragement of friends
to whom we have submitred’ou project, we have.
undertaken to gather the statistics and publish a
volume of some fivé hundred pages, embracing a.
Compicts Directory of Nevada Connty, in which
will be contained the name, location and business
of every man in the County. + full and concise
History of the County, from its settlement down
to the presenttime, An accountof all the notable mines, their location aud yield, as far as can
be accurately a-certained. A history of the canals, cust of coustruction, capacity, &c., and in
brief, fall statistics ot every branch of industry,
whether mininy, ag: iculiural, nechapical or other, that. is of interest or profit tomen. Weexpect to make the book a depusitery uf facets that
shall render it invaluable, not only to the citizens
of the county, bu: te eapitatist-, merchants. aud
business men generally, as well as to the reading
public wherever it goes. It will gather up. in a
preservable shape, the past history of a portion of
the earth s rurfuce, the wealth of whose mines
und material resvurces are superior to those of
any other territory uflike extent on the giobe —
It will embgdy in convenient form every fact
bearing npon +he present condition of thecounty,
its statistics of every deseription, and will present soach an array of fucts and figures as chall
tend to’convince fam lies far away of the desirableners of its sviland climaie for permanent
humes, County pridein some degree impels us
‘oe the work. and we trust that the -ame motive
power will induce the citizens of Nevada County
to belp us with zeal in the ta-k we have undertaken to do. -Tve nae of the work we propore
to call **Bean‘s Directory and History,of Nevada
County.” It will be accompanied with a Map of
the County, drawn by H. 8. Hradley and engraved
