= ; = = SENATOR Nyx: —The campaign has ‘opened in Nevada, ‘and “they copperheads shaving been vitalized by the: infusion of a little Johnsonism, have a full ticket in the . field: . The election takes place:on the 6th of November and. will result ,in the triumph. of the entire State Union ticket, the county ticket may Be defeated by dis@entions in Story. The contest now is for the Senatorship, and Governor Nye will undoubtedly bereturned. Little DeLong, . taking advantage of. the illness of Nye, and knowing that the only possible way of defeating the man who towered above-him in ability and loyalty, as Mount Shasta above the foothills, would be to destroyhis. réputation; De Long attempted the work, anda cloud rested upon the Senator’s reptation, for the greatest villain top destroy the noblest structure. Little ng, the Yuba county joker, was “geconded by the copperhead organs of Nevada and California. They all knew of Nye’s ability and influence in the Senate, and desired to defeat him. The vindication of Nye has been published and it is fujl and complete. The shafts intended for his destruction have returned upon his enemy, and DeLong has ptoved true to his California reputation. Before the numerous documents and overwhelming tes‘timony cited by Nye, his baseless charges are swept away like Autumn leaves before . he tornado, DeLong charged that ‘Nye “pocketed $80,000 while Indian Agent of the Territory. Nye states that only $35,000 was appropriated during his administration, and that the greater part of this was used in the purchase of goods in New York and. the payment of freight. Every dollar expended -is accounted for and a fall settlement is shown with the Governmenit, ‘The charges inrelation to Nye’s receiving two and a half feet. of ground from Harrold for securing his release, are fully disproved. It is sliown that. the deed in question: was made some months beforé Harrold’s arrest. The following additional refutation is given. We quote from the review of the defense by the Enterprise ; “Nye shows by a statement from Hon. J. » Neely Johnson that. he-was employed by “the partners of Harrold to proceed to San Francisco, for the. purpose of purchasing Harrold’s interest, ina certain mine for them ; that he effected the parchase, and for, that, and previons; services the two and a half feet of ground were conveyed to . him. He knew nothing of the conveys . . @féé until the’ deed was placed in his hands. Some time after, Harrold comMenced suit for the recovery of the ground, alleging that no consideration Was exama bone Ima ortagain be called ae ine Vy ie the people to desuch unjust accuct aaa wever, one cause for Rrionin be laren business. ye AT hig charges, Mr. DeLong has ‘not accused me of octupying & doubtful political position, nor have I been a in my defense to procure certificates from Democrats to prove that I was a Union man.’ Those fantiliar with DeLong’s course in this State and. Nevada -willsee. the-force of these remarks. . He Hep, wis Grur—E. G. Hall, of Hornitos killed a Chinaman recently, says the Mariposa Gazette, under very peculiar circumstances, He heard a noise inhis hen house and‘-got up and went there when he met a Chinaman in the very act of stealing chickens. . In-attempting to seize tlie felow Hall accidentally got one hand in the Chinaman’s mouth. With the other he seized hold of his cue, and twisted it around his neck and hung on. . The severe biting of his hand caused Hall to faint. Mrs. Hall, thinking her husband was gone longer than was necessary, and fearing that something had happened, went to the chicken house, where she found Hall and the Chinaman on the ground, The former had fainted and the latter was choked to death, It required’ considerable of an effort to pry open the dead Chitiatian’s mouth to relieve Hall’s hand. This was one of the strangest deadly encounters we ever heard of. oo } How ANDY JOHNSON REWARDS SonpT&RS.—In Burlington, Iowa, he has given the post-office to Thomas French, a very moderate Republican, over Capt, Halliday who was wounded and disabled in the army on the recommendation of Judge Wilson the Representative from the Burlington District. In Fairfield, Iowa, he gives the post-office to J. D. Jones a rampant Copperhead during the war, instead of Mrs. McAllister the widow ofa gallant soldier who was recommended by Mr. Wilson and others. THe First TELEGRAPH MeEssaar.— The first public message ever sent by électric telegraph went from Baltimore to Washington, dated the 14th June, 1844, addressed to Silas Wright, of New York, announcing’ the nomination by the demo‘cratic convention then im session in the ‘former city,of Mr. Polk for the Presidency. A,.member of Congress was defeated in Indiana for re-election: im ¢onsequence of his vote sustaining’ an ‘appropriation of twenty-five, thousand dollars to aid the enterprise, on the ground that “a man who. could be made to believe in such a humbug was too big a fool to go to’ Congress.” THe Sap FaLLor a Pusiic MAn.—A St. Louis re correspondent harates the following lamentable story: Coming-4 down Chésnut street, St, Louis, one day last week, I was strnck by the appearance of an old man past 60, who wore a threadbare coat, shiny with constant’ wear, and in the deed. As an excuse for the . . whose hat was bruised and seedy. His @uit, Harrold said he was ‘hard up,” and had commenced proceedings when he was’ ‘drunk, Mr, Nye did not regard his small “Yaterest as being of much value, the entire hiine being mortgaged at the rate of about $2,000 per foot, amd offered to re-convey to Harrold tlie two-and a half feet; but . Harrold refusedto accept more than one foot, and a deed was accordingly made to him for thatamownt. Mr. Nye denies that Harrold advanced him money in Sain Fran¢isco or presented him with a watch. He -ogays Hatrold exchanged watches with him ‘at one time; dnd got rather the best of him by the friendly transaction. Mr, Nye ye _establishes the utter falsity of the atge by producing a letter from Senator Stewart, admitting that he (Stewart) was instrumental in effecting the release of Harrold, and that Nye was not) in the ‘eountry at the time!” The charge of “eorraption in the use of the purdoning power and of receiving pay for signing the bill f for the purchase of the State Prison grounds, are as fully disproved as the one ip regard toHarrold., The “arrangement” _ charged, by DeLong as having been made ‘between Stewart and Nye is disproved by . wlgtter from the former. His witnesses “eres ‘well known in Nevada and California, “and the testimony is overwhelming. «In -¥onclusion, ‘Nye makes the following home _ thrust at, Deeuly ‘whith is the only at tron + head was bent towards the earth, and his walk was a tottering shuffle, the effect of whisky and old age, He reeled from one side of the pavement to the other, and at last brought up against a lamp-post on the corner, when a young-looking loafer com‘ing along saluted him with, “Holloa, Jim! Come and take a drink.” The old man’s eye brightened, and, arm-in-arm, he sauntered along to the nearest groggery with his companion. Five years ago that old man was James Green, United States Sen ator from Missouri, and in the days of the Kansas and Lecompton matters he was next to Stephen A. Douglas, the ablest' debater in Congress. But the war broke out, Mr. Green was sent, to the. rebel Congress, soon lost his property, his position and his character, and now he isa poor drunkard, and earns barely a nore of a living as a calaboose #hyster. AT THEIR OLD “TRICKS. mig Mormons have been lynching men’ for settling on land near Salt Lake City. They took five men, John G, Deaver, > C. morsén, F. B. Se hlostniller, Dr. J. M. Williamson and . . Captain Albert Rown, and ‘il-tYeated all of them, more of less, arid ordered them to leave the Territory. It was’ done by forty heh disguised, bit they, said it was done . , by order, -'There'is not the slightest doubt . , after Brigham’s threat, about its having . been done by. orders, It is time thatthe . Maveulber : day of Thanksgiving and prewe for the people of the United States.” He ought”also to appoint a day . of homiliation and prayer for the Copperjohn. the sons, of which he should be chief mourner. Let him be clothed in sackcloth and yy ; and bag his head. ROMANCE OF THE BATTLE, Ruin: —A Florence journal says that after the battle of Custozza a surgeon of the Italian arniy discovered among the wounded a young edrporal of bersaglieri still alive, notwithstanding three severe injuries in the neck, left arm and right leg. "When about to dress thesewounds the surgeon perceived that the sufferer was a young woman, who then declared her name to be Hermina’ . Hanelli, and her age twenty,,, Just, before the opening ‘ofthe campaign, her brother, ‘who was a bersaglieri, had fallen ill, and . . returned home to his. family until his recovery. The. sister, whose parents had previously had some difficulty in preventing her from joining the Garibaldians, took advantage of that circumstance, and, eutting short her hair, dressed herself in her brother’s uniform. and joined his regiment, her resemblance to him ennabling her to pass unnoticed. Four heurs later her regiment was engaged, and she was wounded on the field of battle. After the discovery of her sex by the surgeon, she was taken to Florenee where she died a few days after. bai Tuk fortunate Spaniards who become money. They receive a salary of $50,000, havea state.carriage furnished them at . the public expense, three palaces to live in, and their authority is almost unlimited.— Of course there are enormous pickings undersuch a system, and Governor Dulce, who has recently returned to Spain, is reported to have made a million of dollars. Concha, a former Governor, carried away $3,000,000, whilst Serrano, who was almost a bankrept, but.a favorite of the Queen, was appointed Captain General of Cuba, for the sole purpose of recuperating his fortune. Louris NaPo.Eon is building a $5,000000 opera house in Paris, which will rival, in extent ard grandeur the. Coliseum. at Rome. ‘It will cost about $5,000,000, and will be constructed entirely of stone, brick. and metal. Nothing combustible will enter into its composition. It will cover, sevenanda half acres and be two hundred feet in external height. The auditorium, three thousand persons. Every. box will have its separate saloon attached, fitted up like drawing-ooms, end @ carriage way from the street.
