It is wholly and totally on the score
of bitter, bigoted partizanship that a
relentless warfare is being waged
against McFarland, It is not charged,
or if it be it is a malicious falsehood,
that Judge McFarland has ever, in any
degree, permitted his political proclivities to influence his judicial course or
ever so slightly color his rulings or decisions from the bench. Asa Judge
he has always exhibitedthe utmost
impartiality between Democrat and
Republican, and so invariably and ineven his most viralent political opponents-have been compelled toadmit
and applaud the fact. Off the bench,
however, and apart from his official duties, he has been a staunch, earnest ars
dént, unswerving and tireless Repubs
lican. In the darkest, drearest hour of
the Nation’s peril, his tongue never faltered in giving utterance to the high,
faith im the sare triumph of free” principles; No matter who quailed or how
many fell by the wi¥side or skulked inthe high aia the Republicans of
Placer and Nevada were never in a dire

face, that they could not rely upon McFarland to champiun their cause, unless
his officiakduties forbade his doing so.
if the cause was in danger, and it, was
egpboned the emergency demanded his
aid and assistance, a call never went up
to: McFarland “help us or we sink-!”

A DirrerEence:—Judge Crockett, in
his late card in the Bulletin, says:
Taking no active part in the canvass,
even in my own behalf, I have not
deemed it incumvent on me ~to: interfere a8 a partisan in the contest between
Judge Sawyer and General Wallace.
‘But, whenever the occasion demanded
it, . have expressed my true opinion of .
General Wallace, by saying that I knew
‘him to be a lawyer of great ability, and
I esteemed him as an honorable and
most estimable gentlevan. On the
other hand, when my opinion of Judge
Sawyer has been asked, [ have replied
that I considered him an honést’ man
‘and laborious and able Judge. I could
not, with-truth,lave-sgaid less of either.
It will be noticed that Judge Crockett
says General Wallace is an able lawyer,
and Judge Sawyer “an honest man and
laborious and able Judge” Mark the
difference honest men. , :
THE JUDICIAL QuESTION.—A corress

private habits und character of Judge
McFarland, orto his induastry in the
dispatch of official business, no objection has been or-can be fairly urged.
He has been tried in the. position. and
not been found wanting, In voting for
him we vote for one who has an honor.
able and unstained record behind him—
a record which is at_:once the pledge
and guarantee’ of fidelity and-of an
honorable record in-the future. Why
then should he not be supported in an
office that really ought to be held during
good behavior? And why, especially,
should not every true Republican and
every consistent Union man of what~
ever party rally to his support ?
