NEVADA CITY, GALIFORNIA,
LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,
_ A Hetnous Crimg.—A day or two
ago, Clata Davis, a young lady aged
about twenty years, died at her home
in Sweetland, in this county, ander
circumstances which aroused suspicion
that she had been foully dealt with, and
it was decided to hold an inquest on
her bedy. The facts developed show
that the treble crime of seduction, abortion and ‘murder had been cdmmtitted
by some one. Lhe young dady was of
prepossessing appearance atid of fair
edication. She had been residing for
several years in the same house with .
“her father, George Davis, and her uncle .
Henry Mc(racken, her mother’s broth-~
er, her mother being dead. It ‘has for
some time been believed-inthe neigh=. cies of inertion, with laziness, whereas it usual. ly arises froma want of orgaric energy, for
borhood that she was. pregnant, and
her sudden death taken in connection
with the report, aroused so strong sus.
picion of foul play, that an investiga.
ton "was demanded. The following
‘particulars. we received by telegraph
last night: The town of Sweetland was
thrown into a state of excitement yes+
terday, October 8th, bya report that a
young lady by the name of Clara Davis
had diedon the morning~of that day.
from an abortion committéd by one
Henry McCracken, an uncle of the des
ceased, to conceal the fruits of his in¢estuous intercourse with her. Justice
Stotlar, went from San Juan to Sweets
land, and found the girl, aged about
eighteen years of age. The Justice
_ summoned a Coroner's jury, and a long
examination was had. _
The jury rendered a verdict that Miss
Davis had died from the effects of certain medicines administered to her by
her Uncle McCrackin, and that previoug to her death she had given ‘birth
to a full grown child the night before,
to'wit, Oct. 7th, which ‘child could uot
be found. McCracken was arrested and
given until next Tuesday morning for
hearing. The details are most revolt.
ing.“fn THEATRE.—To-morrow evening

and has it under excellent control. The
Fakir adds to the interest. of his entertainment, each evening, by presents
, ing a large number'of gifts to the audience. . His presente are-all usefut-and . '
many of them valuable. The leading
present one evening at Grass Valley
was 4 handsome lodnge valued at $25.
Maticious Miscu1Er.—Officer Rid«
ley informs us that on several occasions
in playing pranks, which if continued,
may subject the. perpetrators to arrest
and prosecution for malicious mischiefOn Friday night, a pile of woodwas
placed in such a way against Wells,
‘Fargo & Co’s. express office, that any
one opening the’ door from ‘the inside
might sustain serious injury. On the
opposite side‘of the street two oil cans
‘were placed one above another, and on
this a bundle of shakes were set in such
a Way as to tumble in when the door
opened. These tricks may be fun for
the boys, but they, might result in mis—
chief.
Lost,-—A lot of legal papers were lost
in this city about the 23d of September.
Any one finding and returning them to
this office will be suitably rewarded.

General Debility is Nature’s Appeal
for Help. ee
Thousands of persons, without any specific
ailment, are victims of languor and fasaitude,
The unthinking are apt to confound this epewhich the subjects of it are no more responsible than the near-sighted are for their defective vision. Such persons, although they
may be free from pain, are as truly invalids,

disease. They require‘a tronic and atrEeRaTIve, that willrouse and regulate their torpid
organizations. In cases of this kind, HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS produce
