The Rights of Miners,
“Never since the debris discussion
began has the Record-Union ‘extended a word of favor or of practical advice tothe minera. It has upon every available occasion sought to prej*
udice the people at large against
them by utterances claiming to be
written in « spirit of -lisinterestedness, but really teeming with bitter
prejudices and sophistry. It has covertly urged the farmers of the valley
to seek redress in the Courts. It
has argued thata way to divert the
tailings might be easily dévised so as
to permit the, continuance of hydraulic mining, thus meaning to keep
in the good graces of the miners also,
if possible, and yet with al its pretended knowledge of the subject has
failed to suggest any particular system of canals, flumes, or anything
else calculated to solve the problem.
Stripped of all veribage, the RecordUnion says the hydraulic miners
must go. . [t misrepresents their
spirit and distorts their arguments.
A notable instance of this latter fact
can be found in its a.leged reply to a
communication on the subject that
recently appeared in the columns of
the Transcrier. Should the corres~ pondent deem it worth while to answer the misrepresentations of his
attitude, as well as the attitude of
the classhe fairly represents, he .
will be affordecd-an opportunity todo
so through these columns.
hs, RATER
The First of the Beginning.
A. C. Bingham, City Treasurer of
‘Marysville, has caused the following
to be published over his signature:
Received, Maryaville, October Ist
1879, from the ‘*AntiDebris Associa‘tion of Sacramento Valley,”. three
thousand ($3,060 -) dollars, for the
payment of the costs of Court, and
of charges and expenses, Other than
* counsel fees, which shall be incurred
in the action now pending in the
name of the City of Marysville,
against hydraulic miners on the Yuba and its tributaries, said amount
to be expended at such times and in
such amounts as the Common Coun.
cil of the city shall direct, and only
for the purposes above named, © And
upon a AetHiaite judgment being ren_ dered in said action or upon the final
determination of saidaction in any
manner, such portionof the above
sum, at that time not expended shall
be returned to said ‘‘Anti-Debris Association of the Sacramento Valley.”
Should the “tinal determination”
of the Association be an emphatic refusal to listen to the voice of reason
that is and has been from the very
first addressing them from the miues,
they will tind this appropriation of
$3,000 to be but a drop in the bucket.

Threatening the Farmers.
Serious troubles between the city
of Stockton and thg farmers located
above that place threaten to také
formi sogn. The latter have of late
years been trying t&increase the carrying capacity of Mormon slough by
plowing up the bottom of it at bends
and narrow places. This loosened
earth is carried down by the current,
and thousands of tons of it is deposited along the water front of Stockton, At the rate these deposits
are filling up the channel (ten to
tavelve feet in two years) the water
communication of that town will be
' ruined in the nextten years, it is
averred. In commenting upon the
danger the Stockton Herald says:
‘There must be some recourse for
the city. An injunction restraining
further operations by the farmers
would be in order if such action is
possible.”

{ Irish, Chas. E. Taber, E, C. HutchArrested for Bcfrauding.
Wednesday a stranger giving his
name as Alexander Greig went into
Judge Garthe’s office to have a
deed acknowledged. He was told it
would be necessary for some one to
identify him, He said the only person Who could do 80 Was Mrs. Victoria McLain of Willow Valley to
whom he wanted to transfer the land
(situated in Yuba county) for $409.
She was brought to town, said he
was the party he represented to be,
and the deed was duly ‘acknowledged by the Judge, asa Notary Public.
Greig took the four hundred dollars
and left on the afternoon train for
Colfax. Two or three Hours later C.
T. Laney, whose father formerly resided on Selby Flat near town, arrived herein pursuit of him. He
said that his father loaned Greig .
money with which to pay for the
land, taking a note therefor that was
due in ninety days; It Was to have
been paid yesterday, and Greig went
over to Marysville, apparently to sell
the land to a man there who had offered $450 for it. With the proceedg.of the sale the note was to
have been taken up. . Laney said
that after Greig left the ranch he
suspected some trick was to be played, ard followed him. At Marysville it was learned he (Greig) had
come in’ this direction, and Laney
continued the chase to learn of the
above transaction on his arrival here.
He at once had a warrant sworn out
before Judge Garthe, charging Greig
with the crime of selling property to
defraud his creditors. Telegrams
were sent to Colfax and along the
line of the Central Pacifié railroad.
Yesterday morning at 9:30 a dispatch was received thatthe fugitive
had been arrested on the train at
Truckee, and would be brought back
here to-day. When arrested Greig
had $400 in coin on his person. -It
is thought he was making for his
former home in Canada. His little
game may prove a serious thing in
the end for Kim.

Why ‘Not?
Speaking of macadamized streets,
they are-a good thing for any placo
ithe size of Nevada City to have in
abundance. They are ¢asy to construct, and kept in repair at a slight
expense of money and labor. How
much more satisfactory it would. be
to all concerned if all the principal
roads that lead out into the country
were of thatjkind as fa? as tie city
limits. We can just as well afford
them: as not, If the city cannot
stand the cost of hiring men to build
them, let our municipal authorities
try to get the use of the prisoners
confined in the County Jail. In addition to them the Marshal ani po:
licemen could pick up enough hearty
and otherwise useless fellows under)
the vag. law to make a big gang of
workmen» It would be an infinitely
better state of affairs than to have
these individuals idling away Jtheir
time on the streets and in jail, as
they now do. Why not at least try
the plan and-see if it won't work?
