“Nevada City sports mourn because
‘the days of old, the days of gold,

never to return, and the frisky tiger
has become almost a thing of the

of the flush past to them when they
read how over in Candelaria, Nevada, the faro dealers have substituted
silver dollars for checks. The stacks
of silver present a brilliant appearance in the tray, and many ‘‘seek to

The Runaways.
The runaway lads captured at
Grass Valley last week and brought
to this city to be kept till their parents in San Franc'sco could send
for them, say they have had lots of
fun on the trip all things considered,
One of them is the son of Capt. Kentzell, the gigantic policeman who
does duty at the Market street
wharf, and the father of the other is
Mr. McKeuna, a produce dealer at
the Bay. Dexter Ridley was in
charge of the boys till Monday evening, when an officer came from San
Francisco after them. They had
been allowed to be at large till the
latte:’s arrival, but ‘he at once
locked them upinthe city prison.
He handcuffed them together in taking them to the train yesterday.
This last precaution was not only
unnecessary, but barbarous. The
little fellows would not have escaped
if they could, and the only effect
that such treatment has is to sear
their consciences,—~> + o~—
Fish Peddier Whipped.
A Chinese fish peddler was rushing
around towh yesterday looking
for an officer to arrest a white maa
who had ‘‘put a head’ on him, The
Mongolian’s story is that Monday
he sold tifty cents’ worth of fish to
his assailant, who told him to come
around later and get his money.
Yesterday he sold «nother mess of
fish to the game pariy who told him
to “charge” them also, He insisted
upon being paid or having his fish
back, whea the white man bruised
him considerably about the face.
No complaint had been filed at al
late hour yesterday afternoon.

“I’m not going to say what the decision of the Court will be,” remarked Judge Sawyer fromthe bench the

suit, to modify the injunction when
it could be satisfactorily shown by

How would that effect the defendants?” To this Mr. Stewart replied

“There is no telling the force of the

sea was simply appalling. When
Cornish, the boatswain, and myself

So said the mate of the ‘‘Grosvenor,” when relating the incidents of

the crew had mutinied and left the

Mechanics who labor on _ lofty
