Turpentine was recommended originilly'in Getmany and claimed to be almost a specitic. “It wis there, also, that the employment of the drag was sulj ced tu the ost severe criticism. Some recent publications have agai : lrawn attention to its alleged value, ant most reasurkible amony these ix an article which appe red in the Therapeutische Monatshefte. The wuthor asserts that he his employed turpentine in diptheria for the past four years, In this time he lost only five c1ses ont of s)xty that came under his treatment. Two of the fatal cases concerned were infants, who appeared moribund when first taken, and died «a few hours later. Tie other fatal cases were «lso unusually severe from the start, two dying in 36 hours, and one surviving five duys. This is certainly a noteworthy record, as diptheria statistics go. The oil of turpentine was administered in dram doses three times a day» Sweet spirits of niter was u-ed as a corrective, in the proportion of'one part of the spirits to fifteen of turpentine. Symptoms. of intoxication were never observed. In addition to the turpentine, a two pei vent solution of sodium s.lycilate was yiven every two hours in tablespoon doses. A yargle of chlorate of potash solution was likewise employed whenever possible. Under this plan of treatment rapid amelior tion of local signs and substitutional symptoms was observed. Usually, improvement begin at once, and it was rarely necessury to pu h the diag beyond five or eight doses, It should be remarked in this connection, however, that a very generous and stimulating fluid diet (strong bro h, port wine, milk) formed a feature ot Dr. Roexe's plan of treatme:t, Those who are inclined to meilicings in the severer forms of diphtheria (and the profession contains many such) will seircely accept the anthor’s tigures without a challenge. Vo the otherhand, for the very reason that violent disptharia ordinarily jus'ifies soy oomy a prognosis, we are ever ready to employ any means which may possibly reduce its frightful mort lity. There is. no reason, therefore, why the turpentine tre.atment of this disease should not be given a fiir trial.” Three Theories. Varions theories are entertained as to the indentity of the lone hignwWayman who robbed the Dewnieville and Nevada City stage near Nigser Tent on Thursday List, Two parties living not-many miles from she scene have each been suspected, and still another theory is that the party is a profession il, A-colored shirt, a jumper-and a hachet were fou din the forest near where the crime was committed. Some of the officers think these articles were left there unintentionally by the robber in bis harry to get away, while others maintain that he stole them in the neighborhood and left them so asto divert attention from himself to some one else. The fellow evidently intended to create the impression thi't he was the notorous Black Birt. He imitated qnite close‘ing his yon and in keeping hid body hidden from the view of the driver and passenyers. It has been be!ieved by many that he must have known just what was aboard, for the reason shat he called for the third mail sack ind the recond express box. A gentleman who is familiar with the locality says the impression is a mistuken one. He stood at the summit of the grade on a bank bat thirty or forty feet uhead of thestage and where he could look down into it and see everything on board. A. Vaughn, editor of the Downieville Messenger, a journal of character and standing. The person killed by Ah Jake was a fellow countryman, who, frum the surrounding circumstances, met his death in an attempt to rob Ah Jake, but the perury of the witnesses and the defense in not having his case properly pre~ented to the Court, resulted in no defense at all, Judge Soward his written me a very strong xppeal in favor of commuting the sentence of Ah Jake to one of imprison vent for life, and resents incontrovertible reasons why it would be a simple act of justice. A petition signed by many of the leading residents of the county unites in ppealing for favor to this Chinaman. Among the names are those of J. W. Orear, T. D. Calkins of the Sierra Tribune, D. T.
