of them werg terribly During the disorder, either with or ways that Ash fired first, eRe ETN TT SSE BEN . Be Daily Gemscrpt. Tharsdey, Ootobor 11, 1877, MOTT ie our only authorPe ge the in to. He will re votve Advertisements sand Subscriptions for the Transonier, and weeeiys for us in oar Bame. ‘4 A Bad Year for Soldiers. This isa bad year for the army. When the rioters had Pittsburg, Pa., at their mercy and were burning property and killing people, General Pearson of Pittsburg was ordered, with some, citizen soliiery, to of— poss the riots and stop their deviltry. Whén his soldiers appeared they were greeted with a-shower of stones and oth«r missiles aod many injured. without orders, the soldiers commenced. firing. One of the shots killed an old man, who was sitting on his piazza across the street enjoying the spectacle. At last, after many peopie had beea killed and millions of property had been -deatroyed, order was restured where= upon a graveand. sedate Pittsburg grand jury indicted General Pear. son for murder, and he Was arrested and sent to jail, but. was afterward released unjer $10,000 bail. We submit that this-isa little discouraging, says the Virginia Enterprise. ‘To command a sold er to go to. war, and then to arrest him for murder, if any one is killed in the war, ia a tough case. If ever a mob deserved firing into it was that same Pitsburg mob. It was uot composed of working men. The railroad men _ struck, but it was not railroad men who fired the buildings and ‘slaughtered the people, It was the scum ofthe city, which the strike brought to the surface, and which was only governed by a desire to steal and to destroy. It was a motley crowd, led by thieves and beldams—a flock of obscene birds which were started from their perch= ve by the etrike, They wee a class which made the back streets of Pittsburg a terror at all times. But on that oeeasion they had come forth together, with —-concorted action, to give full play to avarchy ; to deride the law and plunder and destroy the property of others. ‘ And they did not Care against whom their hands. were laid. For the time being they assumed thet any who had property was their enemy, The soldiera did well to fire upon them. Anything leas than the extreme measures Would have been a cruelty to them and an outrage to the decent men and women of the city, whose lives and property the wild beasts were putting in jeopardy. And if an inno¢ent man was killed it wasan eceident on which there was no taint of crime. Pittsburg ia disgracing itself afresh by this indictment and giving her thieves a hint that their acts were not so very disreputable after all. Tt ie a bad year for soldiers, surely. Pearson isin about the fix of those poor greatures in Bulgaria; who, to save their lives, were foréud to join the Russians, and who, being taken prisoners, are killed by the Turka for traitore. Murdered. Louis Ash, waa killed ina D street dive, Virginia City, on Monday, by wpecial cflicer W. Davis. Ash, in’ his dying deposition, stated that it wasa cold-eluoded murder. First, the springs’ having becom very low, failed to furnish sufficient water to. fun the air blast ; second, the supply of Water purchased. from the Little York G. M. & W. Co. to wash with once a week, for some reason was cut off entirely recently. The first ‘sg being remedied by supplying the. drifts with air by means of a fire blast, the second by the construction of « large water tank, whieh is nearly completed The water caught in this manner will be utilized in washing twice a week, in place. ot once as heretofore when supplied by the ditch The surface of the ground which is eing drifted in the Angel, and also the line between that mine and the Planet, shows conclu ively thatthe latter einbraéee the greater and richer part of.this noted ebannel. The drifta in the Angel are already advanced several handred feet past tile corner line of the of the Planet, which is immediately below and in the direction the chanunel runs, the ground increasing in richness as they advance to the south, or Beur river side. The East New York tunnel is advanced 500 feet, the rock now en < countered being favorable for making good progress, Soe The Wild Cat, it is thought, would have been tamed befure this time had vot the owners been compelled to abandon the raising of the incline for the present, owing to the . ¢, jack uf air. ‘this will be remedied io a short time, when the Cat will be compelled to yield up peacetully the rich treasure so lung locked up in her bowels, The tannel in this mise is completed a distance of 1,800 feet, The running of the tunnel in the Planet mine is making splendid progresy. The contractors, B. 8, Sbhaer and Wm. Keskeys, besides proving themselves to be first-class miners, through the skilful manner in which the tunnel is belong run, are waking good wages, ‘The tun he: is now in « distance of 350, and they expect to average, until cow-. pleted, aboat 100 feet per month. The annoyance and delay heretofore encounwrad, by the smoke from blasting hanging so long in the fate of the tunnel, has been reuwuied. T. Maguire; aod on which is raised the best frait and vegetables to be totnd in the county. The construction of a tunnel was come meuced in this mine some time since, and wag compleied « distance of 800 feet, but from recent surveys it was found.to be considerable too high; it has therefore been abandoned, and another started 100 feet lower. The mining property known as the Leavey claim was recently purchased by W. P. Dewey, of San Francisco, Mr. Dewey,’ in having the ground surveyed, had also a survey mady of the grade of the channel, front the Swamp Angel mine toa puint below the Leavey ground, showing by this tbat the tuonel constructed by Mr,
‘Léavey, a distance of 200 feut, was 60 feet too high. The contract to rub another one op a lower grade has been let to some Dutch Flat miners, and the work of constructing the same is now under fui) headway, being run day and night.— Faum.
