A Bad Year for Soldiers.
This isa bad year for the army.
When the rioters had Pittsburg, Pa.,
at their mercy and were burning
property and killing people, General Pearson of Pittsburg was ordered,
with some, citizen soliiery, to of—
poss the riots and stop their deviltry. Whén his soldiers appeared
they were greeted with a-shower of
stones and oth«r missiles aod many
injured.
without orders, the soldiers commenced. firing. One of the shots
killed an old man, who was sitting
on his piazza across the street enjoying the spectacle. At last, after
many peopie had beea killed and
millions of property had been -deatroyed, order was restured where=
upon a graveand. sedate Pittsburg
grand jury indicted General Pear.
son for murder, and he Was arrested
and sent to jail, but. was afterward
released unjer $10,000 bail. We
submit that this-isa little discouraging, says the Virginia Enterprise.
‘To command a sold er to go to. war,
and then to arrest him for murder,
if any one is killed in the war, ia a
tough case. If ever a mob deserved
firing into it was that same Pitsburg mob. It was uot composed of
working men. The railroad men
_ struck, but it was not railroad men
who fired the buildings and
‘slaughtered the people, It was the
scum ofthe city, which the strike
brought to the surface, and which
was only governed by a desire to
steal and to destroy. It was a
motley crowd, led by thieves and
beldams—a flock of obscene birds
which were started from their perch=
ve by the etrike, They wee a class
which made the back streets of
Pittsburg a terror at all times. But
on that oeeasion they had come
forth together, with —-concorted
action, to give full play to avarchy ;
to deride the law and plunder and
destroy the property of others. ‘ And
they did not Care against whom
their hands. were laid. For the
time being they assumed thet any
who had property was their enemy,
The soldiera did well to fire upon
them. Anything leas than the
extreme measures Would have been
a cruelty to them and an outrage to
the decent men and women of the
city, whose lives and property the
wild beasts were putting in jeopardy.
And if an inno¢ent man was killed
it wasan eceident on which there
was no taint of crime. Pittsburg
ia disgracing itself afresh by this
indictment and giving her thieves a
hint that their acts were not so very
disreputable after all. Tt ie a bad
year for soldiers, surely. Pearson
isin about the fix of those poor
greatures in Bulgaria; who, to save
their lives, were foréud to join the
Russians, and who, being taken
prisoners, are killed by the Turka
for traitore.
