Wednesday, October 18th.. \-For Supreme Judge, ww. s. SANDERSON, . A Reoistay Law.—Fer a number of years the pres has been urging the passage of n registry law by the Legislature of this State: In many of the Eastern States such -A law has been passed and is: found to do great geod. The young State of Nevada, far behind California in other matters of Legislative: itoportance, has passed a law “for the régistry of voters, and it has done much already to prevent fraud in ‘elections We have néver heard any good reason urged against such a law, while there are very many in its favor. The Supreme Court of . the State bas decided that.e nan must vote in the precinct or district of. which he isa resident, and such alow would enable judges and-inspectors-of election to determine at once whether a man is entitled to vote.— Such a law. would ‘prevent colonization of votera und put an end to mauy of the frauds that are practiced at every election in the State. ‘THe evil ‘effects of the frauds and corruption. of _ which. unprineipled .kuaves are guilty, arénot féit su much in the iaterior as in the larger cities. The elections are 80 disgracefully conducted in our cities that many of our best citizens do not go near the polls, but prefer to cast aside the right to vote rather. than ran the risk of being knockéd down by ballies hired ‘and colonized for the purpose of carrying an election. A luw compelling every man to register his name.in. bis ward or precinct, iu order to vote, will shutout many of these frauds.— We hope that something willbe done to du away with these evile by the next Legislature. Our Tepresentatives, as far as we have been able to learn, are im fuvor of a Registry Law, and we have no doubt many from other parts of the State will be willing to aid in the passage of any law which has . for its object-the preservation of the purity of the ballot box. seni THE Lovesoy Murper.—A writer in the St. Louis Democrat, giving the details ef the killing of Rev. E. P. Levejoy and the destruction of his printing establishment by am Alton mob, in 1837, and it may prove interesting to know that the young man who killed him wae hiweelf killed in the most barbarous manner a short time afterward, in 8 fracas in a bar-reum of the St. Charles Hotel, at New Orleans, and that the man that fired the roof died in the Ohiv penitentiary, where he was sentenced for seventeen years, for highway robbery in Cincinnati. Ocr MINES.—The success attending quartz mining in Yuba and Nevada counties, and in fact in every part of the State where such mining has been, prosecuted, bégins to Convince business men that the mines hold out great inducements for enterprise and capital, while they are becoming aware of the fact that the mercantile and agricultural interests of the State depend almost wholly upon the full developmeut of our own mines. We are told, says the Call, that rock paying only five dollars per ton can be worked with profit. Thereare millions and millions of tons of rock in this State—enough to run thousands of wills for years—that will pay from five to twenty dollars to the ton.— Now that our business men are commencing to take’ a common-sense view of this. matter we may look for the inauguration of an era of permanent prosperity such as the State has‘never yet enjoyed, Agassiz, nt Braziu.—Advices from Rio Janeiro state that Professor Agassiz is de. livering a course of leetures on geclogy, and the desire to hear him is su great-that hune. dreds are nightly disappointed'in endeavoring to gain admittance to the lecture room a SHOOTINTS.—Seventeen ladies of Stoekton who did some fine pistol shooting at the recent target excursion of the Union Guard, of that city, have been elected honorary members of the company. ° ; ee ee “Gorse East.—Fred. Law Olmstead, the wellknown geologist ‘and agent of the Mariposa Company, goes East on the next steamer. The Mariposa estate is going te pieces and Olmstead bas nothing to do. “. Johnson and Séeretary Seward-are opposed . to Fenian projects in the United Statés,; and ‘. At the dunt’ ob have notified the British Government of the thovemeéiits of the Brotherhuod. This announcement, says the Stockton Independent, appears to us to bear the stamp of falsehoed on its very face. When did the English Cabinet evince such solicitude for -our-welfare as to notify -the-American Government of -breaches of neutrality by English subjects, when they were sending arma, munitions of war, and other supplies to the Southern rebels, or fitting out pirate cruisers ‘to destroy. our commerce? -They never ‘showed any such manifestation of justice or ton Administration travel out of its way. to return good for evil—to be over maguanimous and generous to a false and perfidious power—whose poliey it has been to insidiously aid in our destruction in dark and great Republic was only net hoped for but believed by the ruling class of Great Britain? We believe the statements of the London press tu be pure invention, made for the purpose of discouraging Fenianiam at home. } From all we know regardirg the autecedents of the President and Secretary. of State, we believe them to be friends of Ifish independence, and that they have no sympathy in common withthe trentherous aristocratic rulers of England. — A Free May.—An amusing incident recently occurred in one of the mines hereabouts which serves to show that the Emancipation Proclamationis looked upon as of wider application than is generally believed. A son of the Emerald “Isle, who handled a pick in Washoe, obtained wotk. Soon af. ter, he “started in” the superintendent came down into the mine to put a man to work who had been Pat's boss in Washoe. Put addressing the Superintendent, said: «An sure, is that moa going to work here.”— “Yes,” said the Superintendent, “he is going to drifting.” Pat said, “That mon is an enemy of mine and I be d—d if we ean work in the same place.” The Superintendent said, ‘I'm boss here and I reckon you. will work in the same mine.” ‘This was ‘too much for Pat, He shouldered his pick and started for the surface, addressing the superintendentas followe: “Be -jabers, I was made a free mon by the Emancipation Prox elamation, and I'll work where I d—n plase. You can go to h—Il-wid your imine.” nate, “Beer JERKERS ” AKRESTED. -—-The town of Grass Valley has been lately infested by a class known as “Beer Jerkers.” A class of women who go from town to town opening their establishments where “the boys” can get their “beer” pass’d to them by damsels and have their pockets emptied for the pleasure. The firemen of Grass. Valley recently ‘washed out” one of these concerns. A few days since another deck of “Jerkers” came up from Secramento and “set up their traps.” They were not suffered to remain long asa Sacramento offi. cer came up and arrested several of them for picking the pockets of green young men in that city. ——. Tre Granp BLL AT Beat VALLEY ToMIGHT.—The grand ball to be given by Mr. & Mrs. E. O. Tompkins, at the Bear Valley House, takes place to-night. Those who attend and we hope there will be many, are bound to have a glorious time. ’ A splendid supper willbe got up. for the oceasion and the best of music has been secured. body knows how to get up a good pa “Lige”’ Tompkins. Tue Rucixe Passion.—The Memphis Bulletin relates the case of a Southern female refugee whe had. only one faded calico dresa. that she wore upon her back. A benevolent gentleman had a collection taken for her, and realized $15 for her benefit.— She at onee repaired to a dry goods store, where she paid $13 for a lace collar, IMPROVEMENTS.—A walk around the suburbs of this city will convince any one that Nevada is not at a etand-til] on the road of progress. Quite a number of new honses are being built and many are being improved. Within the past few months a good will.
