Interesting developments _ are promised within a few days in the suit of the Government to obtain possession of the~-property of the Mormon Church. It is reported on what is claimed to be good authority that at the newly discovered mine near Prescott’ A. 2 .> rock is taken out yielding $75,009 of gold per ton. ‘A Californian Who Dislikes Alaska. Says a Californian who recently returned from Alaska: ‘It is re» markable, indeed, that so much of the surface ground on the Yukun is frozen solid to a depth of several feet. It is all the more so when we come to real ize the fact that during the summeé: it gets as hot there as in “the South. During the heat of the past season, the miners found it a great cenvenience to go in bathing in the streams at least twicea day, and to seek shady places in which to rock tle gold out cf the gravel. At midsummer the sun beams forth 22 hours out of the 24, while on the high mountain-peaks it is for a period of several days in June not entirely out of sight during the 24 hours. But during all this heat and long days of continuous sunshine, the _ 8un’s rays do not penetrate the heavy mosses that cover nearly the entire surface of the country, and conse‘quently the frozen ground underneath lies in that state as if packed in an icehouse. After it once becomes frozen, as any damp ground will doin the winter-time, it quickly becomes covered with this moss, which is of a remarkably rapid growth and attains a depth pf,some two feet or more. During the heat of summer, this moss becomes dry to the depth of several inches, ‘and the miners think that by a continuous burning of it as fast as it dries, they will will soon have the gravel bars along the creeks, at least, cleared off, being of the impression ; that when the gravel deposits are expected to the scorching rays of the sun, and rains and atmosphere, they will readily thaw out. When winter sets in, the hours of sunshine gradu ally decrease, until, during the shortest days, the sun shines but four hours out of the 24. But at this Period, the aurora is most intense and helps very materially in driving darkness from that dreary land. The thermometer goes down to 70 degrees in winter, but the atmosphere is very dry, and consequently the cold is not so perceptible as one would imagine.” Snivon’s cough and Con umption Cure is sold by us on a guarantee. HE CENTURY IS AN ILLUSTRATED For 1887, 2 . £3 Monthly Magazine, having a regular circulation of about.two hundred thousand copies, often reaching and sometimes exceeding two hundred and twenty-five thousand. Chief among its many attractions this year isa serial which has been in active preparation for sixteen years. It isa history of our own country in its most critical time as set forth in THE LIFE OF LINCOLN, By His Confidential Secretaries, J.C. Nicolav & Col. John Hay. . This great work begun with the sanction of President Lincoln, and continued under the authority of his son, the Hon. Robert f. Lincoln, is the only fulland authoritative record of the life df Abraham Lincoln, Its authors were friends of Lincoln before his présidency; they were most intimately associated with him as private secretaries throughout his term of office, and to them were transferred, upon Lincoln’s death, all his private papers. Here will be told the inside history of the civil war and of Pregident Lincein’s administration,—im portant details of which have hitherto remained unrevealed, that they might fifst a pearin this authentic history. By reason of the publf cation of this work, NOVELS AND STORIES. “The Hundreth Man,” a novel by Frank R. Stockton, author of “The Lady or the Tiger?” ete., began in November. ‘Two novelettes by George W.
