Tue Row AGAtn.—Alphabetical (W. READER! HAVE YOU HEARD THE Giap Tipincs?—From the old Keystone State the sound of old “Independence bell” is heard again, and the glorious news has flashed across the continent on the wings of the lightning bringing to loyal hearts on the Pacitic the glad tidings that Pennsylvania has gone for the Union by ‘a large majority. As from old “Independence Hall” suunded forth the news “America is Free.” Soon the eve of the Presidental election in this crisis comes forth from the grand old hills of that State the assurance that “America is redeemed, regenerated and delivered from out of the hands of the rebel serving Democracy.” Obio, Indianaand Nebraska, catching the inspiration of patriotism from the past, have recorded their verdicts, in favor of unity, freedom and peace. The Union men everywhere ‘Tejoice at the glorious news. A dis” patch from Senator Cole states that Pennsylvania has given 12,000 Republican majority, Obio 25,000, Indiana 10,000 and Nebraska 2,000, all large gains over the majorities of last year. A. W. Lester; who is in San Francisco, telegraphs that Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana have gone Republican. A dispatch from Charley Kent, states that Pennsylvania and Indiana have given 15,000 majority. Alfred Barstow,Secretary of the State Central Committee, telegraphed yesterday at 2 o'clock as iollows: “All Republican. Pennsylvania 10,000, Obio 25,000, Indiana 10,000, Nebraska, 2,000.” A‘ sheet called the Independent Dispatch, published. in San Francisco in the interest of Jeff. Davis, the Confederacy and the Devil, and the policy of which is entirely independent of truth, grossly misrepresents the facts in regard to the late disturbance in this city. THe Penusylvania Democratic committe came out in a Napoleonic bulletin, congratulating the party on the “glorious vi in Maine,” and urges the people of Pennsylvania to repeat the lesson of Maine. That. State haying done the same, as. Maine did, we . appease the Democracy are satisfied. the . smitherens, and the “Lost Cause". This outrageous attempt to deprive the republican Irish of this city oftheir rights, and prevent them holding meetings in their.own wards, will work the Democratic party no good, will gain for it no strength here. Such violence will awaken our people to a knowiled the spirit which seeks control of public affairs and possession of the powers of government. Such an attempt to i, 28 press freedom of speech and prevent t discussion of political topics by the loyal, freedom-loving Irish of this city; will react upon the despicable instigators thereot, The John\Comiskeys will learn to their sorrow that this sort of cam-— paigning will be the most’ difficult to -the" Democrats; tar legs-snecessiul than. ever before. If it ig the style of Democratic argument to be employed, let it this city will fight it out-on that line. It.will require no second lesson of this sort to prepare Republicans to maintain their rights and privileges: Let John Comiskey maréthal the poor fools who know no better than follow him, and let the right of our citizens to peaceably meet and discass political topics be setthat is the only way settled. Chicago Ie Hep. Aug. 28th. Tae Philadelphia.. Press says “that Washington fought and won the battles of the revolution, and was made President. Jackson fought and won the battles of the second war of independence, and was made President.— Grant fought and won our battles in the overthrow of the slaveholders’ re— belliou, and why should he be made an exception to the rule? .He won’t be. THE Chattanooga Rebel, of May 20th, 1863, referriug to the efforts made by Northern copperheads to ass.st the South in disselving the Union, says :— “How natural it is that we all feel kindly towards Mr. Vallandigham. He is our style of man. We admire McClellan and Buell also; we admire Vailandigham mere than all, because* he was against. the war at the start, and has -kept his faith ever since. WE learn from the Reporter that
Democrats in Sacramento were jubilant over the news: from the East, on Wédnesday night. Wonder how the poor fellows feltlast night ? Sie semper. the “Those citiGrant among leyal Democrats, Philadelphia Press says : renown. Thereis hardly a township in which voters are not to be found in favor of Grant, who voted against Lincoln in 1860, and for McClellan in 1864." SAID an old darkey, when_ Sherman was moving southward, “I reckon he will win. They always whip him, they say, but still he keeps a comin” and a comin’.” It is’ pretty much so. with these Democratic gains, They have gained every year since the Republican party was born, and still “it keeps a comin’.” Bye and bye, no doubt, the rebels will “get it just where they want it,” much as they used todo with Grant and Sherman. And then, probably, they will surrender at discretion ! ——— THE complete returns of the Vermont election give 27,253 Republican majurity, the total vote being : Page, Republican. .... pop Majority. . of sustain, and, though characteristic with be so understood, and the Tanners of tled by a test of physical sirength—if in which it canbe fIn alluding to the movement toward zens who have it in-charge in Pennsylvania include persons of influence and ; nia.
