Times Without humber have new processes_for the redction of oreSbeen-introduced into Nevada county, and times without number have taose processes, after thorough _ tests, been demonstrated flat failures, Szientists may sit down in San Francisco and theorize as ‘to how they can extract and save the precious metals to the last-particle. They prove their assumptions by working sinall quantities of ores at their labritories, and all.they claim appears reasonable. When, however, they enlist capital and erect, large works to carry on the business for. speculative purposes, almost invariably they . are doomed to disappointment. After a few desperate efforts, they shut up shop. and their processes and themselves exist. on'y in the memory of the people. The chlorination process _ employed at the Maltman Reduction Works, in this district, has, however, stood the test of time in an eminently satisfactory manner. At first our practical miners were inclined to receive with doubt thestatements made as to itseflicacy. After having had their ores treated successfully by it . for.twenty years, they can now do no less than admit its” practicability. The strong-st possible proof of its valie is th» fact that anamber of the leading mines in. this section kee> Mr. Miltman and his force of em>'oyes busily at. work all the time. ‘ — — +> 2 > Extendin: tac Narrow Gauge. Narrow Gauge!" There's richness for you. The Union seems to’ forget all about the read now reaching from this place to San Juan, While it is true thatthe thoroughfare is now not much better than none at all, a few hundred dollars expended in putting the Yuba grades in shape would make itone of the best in the country; whereas, to build one from Grass Valley would cost more tlian as many ‘thousands, >.> plaice connection with Facts are Stabborn Things. Nevada City is obtiining unfavorable notoriety on. aecount of the frequent deeds of blood committed’ in and about the place.—Crass Valley Union, If we remember rightly, the last two convictions of white men for -murder in Nevada county resulted in. sending one oj Grass Valley's citizens to San Quentin and another toe the gallows. Does the Union propose to admit that Grass Valley is "but a suburb of Nevada City, in order to prove its assertion quoted above, _ Oo oo Stealing Our Thunder, . . (Pittsburg Paper.) During an excursion from this city to Niagara Falls, and while at Cleveland, an incident occurred that will never beforgotten by those who heard it. The Kennard house at that city wascrowded with guests, when an eccentric and witty druggist of Smithfield street appeared late at night at the hotel ottice and de:nanded a bed. The clerk replied tnat there were only two vacant beds man, and the other a room whereingwas a Pittsburg evening mewspaper man, who were with the excursion, “To tell the truth, they are both pretty drunk—so you may take your choice as to which room you will sleep in.” ; Re The druggist said that on general principles he would take his chances . with the evening newspaper journalist, as they excelled the morning men in move ways than one, and he ‘would doubtless be so drunk that he would he dormantly quietly all night. He went to bed and was soon sound asleep. The journalist, however, awakened about 12 o'clock, and thinking it a long time between drinks, dressed himself, uinconsciously in the druggist’s clothes, and sailed out to make a night of it. Every and anon he muttered, as he treated all present: 2 “Funniest thing I ever heard of. When I wént to bed last night I only had twenty-five eentato my name, and now I’ve got over a hundred dollars, (showing a corpulent roll of bills,) and I'm bound to spend every cent of it before moruing.” He did.
