AT CENTS PER WEEK. PER wean.. "six pon rN 00.0 { Paid Strictly in Advance. 96 per year. Nevada County Official Press _— TUESDAY ..OCTOBER 16, 1883. Tue number of literary men who make a'financial hit is. about the ‘ game as the lucky miners who find a bonanza. One hearsall about the stroke of goodluck, but little about the non-success of the miners, and little about the ninety per cent, of literary men who only eke out a bare subsistence. Bret Harte finds a four thousand dollar consulship at Glasgow necessary to help him through. Charles Dudly Warner accepts a stipulated salary on the Century. Mark Twain married a considerable fortune, which he has sumpplemented by some lucky literary ventures. But he early found it necessary to have his books sold by subscription agents, and for many years he has catered to the subscription market. For years he was in the field as a public lecturer, and in. those years probably earned more Gan he de: rived by way of revenue from his books. He once let himself out to the Galaxy to write a funny . article oncea month, but he could not stand the regular pumping of his brains in that way very long. ARTIFICIAL eggs have recently appeared in the market at Portland, Maine, and have stood every test, except that of hatching, experiments in this line not having been yet extensive enough to warrant the conclusion that they will all prove a failure. The shell of the artificial egg is made of paper pulp, with the addition of a little plaster of Paris. The lining membrane is made of very fine tissue paper, soaked in paraftine. The white of the egg is of refined gelatine or glue reduced to the proper consistency, and the yolk of cocoanut, batter and cotton seed oil, which, when mixed in certain proportions, form a globule which is covered by any harmless matter, and. hangs suspended in the gelatine. The manner in which the white and yolk are got within the shell is yet asecret with the manufacturers, who will keep it until the hatching qualities of the new egg are perfected. In the meantime, these eggs ure very much sought for, and rapidly crowding the old-fashioned ‘then fruit’ out of the market, I Prorgssor J. Le Contre sums up the conclusions of a paper on the “Genesis of Metalliferous Veins,” which ia based on the examination of phenomena of metalliferous deposit by solfataric action in Nevada and California, by saying that subterranean waters of any kind, but especially alkaline, at any temperature, but mostly hot, circulating in any direction, but mainly up-coming, and in any kind of water-way, but mainly in open fissures, by deposit form metalliferous veins, It is evident, therefore, that the form, appearance, and mode df occurrence of veins must be infinitely various, but the mode of formation is aubstantially one. A LIGHTNING express train will shortly be started between Paris, Berlin and St. Petersburg. On the’ Russian frontier at Eydtkuhnen the carriages will receive new: wheels adjusted to the wider gauge roads of Russia, The speed of thetrain will be fifty-five miles in an hour. The train will contain a kitchen, a dining-room, reading and music rooms. Farner Lyncu of Lakeville, Connecticut, has set up a crucifix by the road side. This was two much for the Protestants to bear. They 'intended to introduce a resolution at a town meeting declaring the crucifix anuisance and have it removed. But the Father had marshalled his hosts and outnumbered the Protestants two to one. Mr. Foro, in his recent work on forras of government ib America, remarks that the chief functions of a city government are merely executiveand ministerial, and in which politics have little or no place. He adds that the matters to which al: municipality must give its attention are those of business rather than of statesmanship. THERE are said to be about 60,000 drummers in this country including men who run around sell selling on commission, Some of them get §10,000 year and expenses; quite a. number get from $3,000 to $5,000 a Year; andthe average salary is about , $1,500 and expenses, which average $6 a day. ree A TWo-YEaR-oLp child in Barren county, Kentucky, weighs 187 lbs., . “and is the last of seven children who are remarkable for their enormous ‘adipose development. The parents Tae between St, Julian and i Bitters, — T . Tue New York Retailer, a liquor organ, tells the truth when it says: . ‘Everywhere and in every State the [liquor question is pushed tothe front. It has not-been dragged in «by politicians. It is prohibition in one place, taxation in another, Sunday suppression in another. Under the general head of temperance this now foremost question is — breaking through party ines, overruling timeserving puliticians, and demanding to be heard. Joun M. Cuark, for thirty years Sheriff of Boston, says that too many arrests are made, The public has no. conception—though the fact is showed in a general way by the fail‘ure of Grand Juries to indict in about a third of the cases presented—of the number of persons imprisoned on mere suspicion. Two electric light companies are battling for the privilege of illumiaating Joliet, Ill. ~. The fight has reached the stage where both com: panies propose to light the town for nothing, and the citizens are holding off in the hope thatthe companies may yet offer to pay for the privilege. Tue willingness of the American press to help Mr. Tennyson in his huge task of writing an elegy to the late John Brown ought to inspire the deepest gratitude in the Laureate’s heart, There are suggestions by score—most of them, however, too sad failures in fun for quotation. Tux sale of liquor is now forbidden in whole or in part iu seventy one counties in Georgia, leaving less than half the counties in which its sale in unrestricted. The last Legislature has forbidden the sale in nine counties more, and provided for elections i n thirty others. In Islington, a parish in England, Moody & Sankey begina six-months’ mission early in November. A BE ESTEE TR EIR Bank Exchange. Sailors om the Sea and Laborers on the Land—Help for the Larboard Watch. “There is no telling the force of the wind; and theheight and rush of the sea was simply appalling. When Cornish, the boatswain, and myself came down from aloft, after + furling the main-royal, we were wet through and half dead from the hard toil and the exposure.” So said the mate of the ‘‘Grosvenor,” when relating the incidents of an Atlantic cyclone, after nearly all the crew had mutinied and left the ship in boats to escape punishment. Mechanics who labor on lofty buildings; carpenters, masons, painters and bricklayers, may be called a kind of shore sailors, and that their number are not more largely decimated by acciden tand disease is a marvel. Mr, Jabez Rogers, tuck pointer, house painter, ete., of No. 608 Madson street, Chicago, over a pipe and autumn fire, said to your correspondent: “No, I am only a young man yet —thirty five, that’s ali; but the kind. of work I do tells on a fellow’s looks and constitution. Last Spring I was run down with overwork and exposure. I had to give up doing any work myself, and just made out to oversee my men, in a sort of half-and-half way. I thought I was played out for good and all. I was racked with a cough, stupefied with a cold, and torn and disabled with Rheumatism. Do? I took Parker's Ginger Tonic and it cured me. Those three words tell the atory—it cured me ” To all persons subject to risk from exposure, PARKER’Ss GINGER Tonio will commend itself, It purifies the Blood, incites the torpid Liver to a healthy activity and opens tif’ pores of the skin.
