Richard Eddy’s examination before Justice Wadsworth, on a charge of robbery, resulted in the defendant being discharged from custody. The evidence showed that the alleged crime was the foolish prank of a drunken man. He wentto Mrs. Phillips’ house and ordered some beer, being then very much intoxicated. He asked her to change: a twenty dollar piece, and when she laid the smaller coins down made a grab and got half ofthem. His actions then-and afterwards, as ehown by the witnesses, did not tend to show criminal intention on his part. The scrape that he got himgelf into by his foolish action will probably serve as a warning to him to hereafter stay sober and train in good company. : Next Year's District Fair. The Directors of the Seventeenth District Fair Association of Nevada and Placer counties yesterday held a consultation and decided to hold next Fair during the week beginning September 2d, which will be the week before the State Fair begins. The Marysville Fair can thus retain the game date as during the present year and. yet. not conflict with the Seventeenth District, which would “be an advantage pecuniarily and otherwise to both, The fruits ripen here later than in the valleys, which is another reason in favor of changing the date in this county. Railway Wrecks. People who left here Thursday night for San eo had a shaking-up at or near Suisun by reason of the Cen“tral Pacific train on which they rode colliding with a freight train. No serious damage was done so far as reported. Friday the caboose of a freight train on the Centre! Pacific caught fire and the flames communicated to the adjoining car. Both cars were cut loose at Emigrant Gap in order to save the train, and another freight train collided with them, doing some harm in the way of breakage. The Brunswick Again Attached. Eastern parties have levied an attachment-on the Brunswick quartz claim at Grass Valley for a little over $14,700, and Sheriff Lord has put in Capt. Fitzgerald as keeper. The debt is for money advanced the company to pay for purchase and development work and to raise theattachments recently put upon the property by Mesars, Tilley, Fletcher and Silvester: It is believed that this proceeding will swamp the Brunswick Company which was never very vigorous financially. Filed His Official Bend. County Treasurer and Tax Collector Shoecraft yesterday filed his official bond Yor the term beginning next Janvary. He is the first of the officers elected on the 6th instant to comply with this requirement. He has to give as Treasurer a bond for $60,000 and as Cullector one for $40,000. ° The sureties on the two qualify in double the aggregate of those sums, or for $200,000 in all. Georgraphically speaking, it is numbered among the giants of the United States. If it should lie down onour seaboard it couldlay its head in thelap of Mayor Hewitt in New York and its feet would rest in the cotton plantations of Georgia; and if it had the nightmare it might kick the top of Florida’s head off. There is another curious fact. If a man was asked to point to the city which is about half-way along the line running from the eastermost point of land to the westermost owned by the United States, he would not probably choose San Francisco, and there he would make his mistake. Drawing a line from the western end of the Aleutian Islands to the eastern end of Maine, you will find to your surprise that the Golden Gate of the Pacific is about as near the niiddle of it as you can easily get. A Poetical Farewell. It being stated that L. P. Schmidt of this city is to officiate as Jailor and Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Dunster’s administration, some of the young gentlemen’s friends at the Champion mine where he is now employed have composed the following rythmical farewell for him: Oh, boys, don’t get angry. when I go away, For the county has offered me better pay. Inthe Courthouse I'll sit with a fine cigar, And my whisky I'll drink from an official jar With keys in my hand and pistol in pocket The door of the tank, I’ll often unlock it. If any of my friends in jail be eonfined Ili do all lean for thep; so boys never mind. The people have gi me an office so fine That I bid farewellto the Champion mine. For the next 3 peers 1’ show what I can do, For the Sheriff’s office I now have in view. Now if I suceeed in getting so high I’m sure I'll be President before I die. When once in the White Hovse—I hope it may be so— I will show the Republicans that the Chinese must go. A Tedious Trip. According to the present arrangements the trip from this city to San Francisco is anything but pleasant. Passengers must leave here at 11 o'clock P. M. and ride all night. Much of the time they are unable to obtain a sleeping car berth at Calfax and are forced to spend the night in’ the passenger coaches which are olten crowded uncomfortably. ———— Piles! Piles! Piles! — Dr. William’s Indian Pile Ointment is the only sure cure for Blind, Bleed‘ing or Itching Piles ever discovered. It never fails to cure old chronic cases of long standing. Judge Coons, Marysville, says: “De William's Indian Pile Olntnent cured me after year of suffering.” Judge Coffinbury,Cleveland,O. says: _ “J have found by experience that . Dr. William’s Tadian Pile Ointment. gives immedate and permanent relief.” We have hpndreds of such testilonger, Sold by uruggiste at 50 centa per box or maled on receipt of price; monials. Do not suffer an instant} > Value as Cures. aoe Dr. A. T. Hudson, of Stockton, writes :. -Having often seen the statement made in the public press, and sometimes in medical journals, that whiskey and ammonia were the acknowledged antidotes to rattlesnake bite, I feel ita duty to administer a corrective to the above fallacious téaching. About thirty years ago Professor Weir Mitchell, of Philadelphia, spent over two years in carefully experimenting with the virus of snake poisons. Taking a few drops of the pure virus from the sac of the snake, mixed it consecutively. with alcohol, ammonia, iodine, bromine, mercury, and other reputed antidotes, the injected the solution of each into birds, rabbits, dogs, goats, and other aniwas not altered in its power, but would produce its specific toxic effect just the same as when it was und’luted. He found also that. the virus was fatal only toa certain éxtent, that is, if it took half a drop to kill‘an animal of thirty pounds weight, it would require one or two drops to kill one of sixty toeighty pounds. Its action is immediate, and kills only when the animal is too small and weak in resistive vitality. It is rare thatcan adult person dies from the bite of a rattlesnake. The virus of the cobra is more intense and fatalv “Several years ago a prominent minister in Philadelphia died. from the bite of a youngcobra. As a given quantity of the rattlesnake virus is necessary to} overcome a certain amount of physical force, it is seldom that such quan: tity is ever deposited by the snake bite upon an adult person. If a large snake should bite a goat of fifty pounds weight, and soon after bite two children of about the same weight, the goat might die, but the childrén would not, for the reason that the goat would receive the largest amount of the virus, when there would be but little left to poison the children. In such a case, whisky being used on the children, their recovery would be attributed to the whisky ; so the friends and neighbors would think they have positive proof ofa sure antidote ia whisky. Here is the fallacy which science alone can demonstrate. If, when whisky is mixed with the poison difactly, it is no antidote, how can it become so when taken into the system remotely, the whisky in the stomach and the poison in the goat? Physiologically, whisky is antidotal so far as it will sustain the flagging powers during the time the poison is being eliminated by the excretory organs. In the light of the above scientific demonstration, how adoctor can gravely or frantically proceed to treat a rattlesnake bite by injecting around the wound permanganate of potassa, or any supposed antidotes, or order a chicken split. open and applied to the wound, or the anus of the chicken applied over the wound, using a number of different fowls for the purpose, isa problem hard to understand in this age of reason. . eee Superior Court. There were a number of invited guests present and all seemed to have had a very pleasant time. Each lady member of the lodge brought with her a basked containing ‘a lunch for two, ‘placing on the inside her name: The baskets were then numbered and numbers corresponding with the numbers on the baskets were placed in a hat and sold for fifty cents each. The purchaser would go'to the committee who had charge of the baskets and get the basket that: corresponded with his number, open it and eat the contents thereof with the young lady whose name was in the basket. This was a great novelty and the committee redped therefrom a little over seventeen dollars. During the evening a program was given as follows : A. Seaman recited a piece entitled “The District Schoolmaster’s Guest.” John Werry next followed with a vocal solo and was encored twice, each time singing a new song. Master E. The profits which dealets in carbonated beverages may reasonably hope to make, says the Analyest, can be readily inferred from the following accurate estimate of the cost of manufacturing each beverage: One glass of plain soda costs onetenth of a cent. One glass of soda-water with syrup costs 14% cents. One giass of mineral water costs 1 cent. : One glass of root-beer costs 1 cent. in English, ‘‘The Exploits of Very Valiant Knight Esplandian, Son of the Excellent King Amadis of Gaul.” Chapter 157, containing that portion describing the golden island of Culifornia, was published in the original Spanish with English translation, in the Sixth Annual Report of the State Mineralogist of California, folio 8. Assuming that this supposed golden land was named from the mythical island of the romance of Las Sergas, there may still be a more ancient though indirect origin of the word California. It may be agked, ‘‘Did the word originate with the author, or did he take it from the works of some still older writer?” The latfer surmise seems the most likely, and it has been suggested that the name came indirectly from Julius Czesar’s wife Calphurnia. In looking up this subject, it is fhteresting to note that similar names were very common in Roman and Grecian history, not only as individuals, but as families, extending through long periods of time, and it would appear likely that the author of the Spanish romance may have had some of them in mind while writing it. : __——__—-—__-_____] A amaze bottle of Ayer’s Sarsaprilla will establish the merits of this medicine as a blood purifier.
