morning, about 1 o'clock, says the
Grass Valley Union, the dwelling
house, oceupied by Mrs. Mary A.
about two miles south of this place
was destroyed by fire. There had
4 o'clock on Sunday evening, and
. the fire originated in the kitchen.
At the hour of the discovery of the
fire one of the little boys awoke and
gave the alarm. Mrs, Bennett and
her two boys ran out of the building,
escaping with only a few articles of
such elothing as they could readily
is left entirely destitute, without shelter, food or clething. The charitable should see that she is relieved.
The woman whose house was burned
was cared for by our citizens about
two years ago and was afterwards
sent to the County Hospital. For
the last six months she has been doing very well, and has supported her
little children by hard work as we
are most credibly informed. Whatever she may have been, her present

A gentleman who resides at Etireka told us that the changes in text
books by Fitzgerald compelled him
to go to an expense of $25 in his own
family, and that he intended to do
his best to defeat him to-day.
Yesterday a poor man called ‘at
our office and thanked us for the
fight we were making against Fitzgerald. He ssid he had been compelled to take his children out of
school because he could not supply
them with new books or accept the
famd. He choose to take them out
of school until he can get able to pay
for books and then send them back.
He proposes to cast a vote against
Fitzgerald for that unnecessary expense to-day.
All working men who have been
to buy unnecessary text booxs will
do the same. .
