learn tuut the Chinese question is
under discussion in Australia with
about vs mach earnestness as it ihere, The Legislature of Queensland, says the Stock Repért, bas im“posed a tix of $50 » bead on each
Chinaman entering the colony, The

years of the date of landing be

must, to receive this re-imbursement, prove that be has not been
and that he has not been chargeable
to any public institution for relief.
This act, it is understood, has reeeived advice of approval by telegraph from the Home Governmert.
Another act imposes an annual tix
of $30 on Chinese gold miners, six
times as much as is required of other natioualities. Bat to thia the

“the Souta American States, the
Sandwich Islands, and all other
countries wnere there has been such
a ferore ubout ‘cheap labor and lots
of it,’’ should at lastbave the same
.experience as California; Some of
our readers will perhaps remember
the time when several semi-deified
mombefs of the Pioneer Society of
SaaFrancisco arose in theirmight
Aad srid to thatwo or three representative Mongols there assembled
‘a3 honored yuests, ‘“‘go hume and
tell your countrymen t» come here.
We want them; we needthem. Let
as many come as wish. There is
room for all here,’’ and beslobbered
the almond-eyed vi-itors in a still}. higher key. One can hardly imaging:
now theiutense yearning for coolie
labor which prevailed in 1850-51.
‘The Australians, having gone through
the same thing, have at last, it appears now, no better remedy for the
eelfsinveked carse than the arbitrary
and ‘unjust means of special taxation.
Instead of pursuing the course above
referred to, another but equally effective one is being tried in ‘this
State now. In nearly every town
_ the people, to a very great extent,
refuse to give these itslic-eyed chaps
employment, It is true there is
‘a large namber employed in mines
o various parts of our county, but
in nearly every instince the mines.
in question would not pay were it not
forthe cheap labor of the Ohinese.
There are some claims, however,
that we know of, that pay well, and
the owaers could well afford to employ white men, but do not because
they wont alithere is in sight aud
think to realiz» considerable by hiriug Chinese, So fur as house ser‘vants are concerned, we know it is
almost an atter impossibility to find
white lubor to fill their places, as
that class can seldom be bad, and t>
secure their services such exorbitint
wages have to be paid that bat few
ean afford to employ them. To be
brief, the Chinese are indispensable
as house servants in the interior of
the State. In this city and Grass
Valley, and we notice by our exchanges that the same course is being pursued in othér towns, the
work of sawing wood has been given
to white boys and men, and the
Mongolians infer . on this that their
presence is not essential to the happiness and prosperity of the people,
and that it is about time for them to
“get upand dust’’ to places where
their company is more appreciated.
This is really the best method of
nolving the Chinese problem. We
do not. kuow of a single instance
where white labor was employed
last year in getting in the ‘winter's
wood,’’ and this year we know of
‘only one instance wher¢ Chinamen
were employed, and in thet case if
_ the work was to be done over there
weald be no need of any Chinamén

Some person in this city made a
4 comiplaint.to the Post Office Department about the wheel that was used
at the Post Office. The charge was
that everybody had an opportunity
of seving who received letters and
where from, te their great annoyance. Notice wasi mediately sent
to Postmaster Haskins enquiring if
such.was the case. Thy, Postmaster
informed the proper authorities everything in regard to the matter,
and fa iher that the wheel had been
in ue, for the ace. mmodation of -he
people, for o¥er ten years. Mr.
Haskins immediately tlured down on
that wheel, and the people who had
always received their letters in that
way, were very much disgusted
Mr. Haskins then wro ve ‘0 Senator
Sargent about it ant yesterday received the following reply:
United States Senate een.
WasHINGTON, Oct. 10th, 1877.
H. H. Haskins Esq , Postu:aster
Nevada City, Sir :—I have consulted
with the authorities of the Post Office Department in regard. to the
wheel used at your office, and explained its use and convenience tu’
ihe people, As a resalt of sach conference, . am allowed to inform you
that you can continue its use until
fur-her action is! tak n by the Department. Probabiy no sach action
will ever be taken. HH auy person
requests that his letters be not
pla-ed on the wheel, you will not
pu them there. There is no law
prohibiting the use of euch a machine, ad the Department has no
wish to deprive the people of a conFvetiience. The use of tiie wheels
‘ean be resumed at North San Juan,
Trackeo, &. .
Respecttuily, A. A. SARGENT.
The wheel will now be put in use
again.
"In Town,
. J, T. Grayson, formerly of the
San Francisco Stock Réport,-but now
with Hahn & Roche, will be in town
tc=lay, and will offer goods from his
house to our dealers. From samples
heretofore forwarded to this office,
-wecan confidently recommend all
‘in want of goods in his line to give
their orders to Mr. Grayson. Gentlemanly and square treatment will
always be had from this house.
Consolidated.
“= The Champion Mining Company
has now consolidated with different
‘owners of adjoining mines. The
mining property ef the company is
of considerable extent and is desirably situated. A tunnel is being
driven into the hill opposite the
the Providence mine, which will
give over 450 feet backs. A Burleigh drill will be introduced as
soon as the present contract shall be
completed. I: is a feature of this
company that stock set apart asa
working fund, and disposed of for
the benefit of the company, has paid
the whole work up to this day, and
we hear that this company will escape assessments: altogether. A
Board of Trustees worth imitating.
Dance To-night.
Don’t forget that there is going
to be the best time at Hunt's Hall
to-night that there has been for 16
years. The Hall will be crowded
with the handsomest women north
of Mason and Dixon’s line, and as
gallant men as ever floarished
in the days of King Patrick, the
16th. The ladies will make the
svlection of partners throughout the
evening, and of course the programme will please everyone. We
hope the dancing fraternity will all
turn oat and enjoy an old-fashioned
time.”
Highway Robbery.
A man named Hatch was stopped
near the Sugar Loafon Weduesday
night last and robbed of $20. Mr.
Hatch thinks he could recognize the
robbers if he ever saw them again.
He wastiding along on horseback
at the time, when the robbura stepped out of the chapparel and demanded his money. He gave them
all he had in gold and kept his silver change.

A year ago last February, says
between John W. Mackay and Hagh
Lamb, foreman of the bonanza mines
as to the capacity of the Consolidated Virginia shaft for raising ore.”
Lamb said he could bring up from
the 1650 level of that mine 600 tens
of ore per day, on an average,
through the month, A wager of a
$100 suit of clothes was finally made
‘between them, and the work commenced. ‘During the twenty-eight
days of that little month 17,724 tons
of ore were raised through that shaft
alone, averaging, as will be seen 633
tons per dey. The result of this
achievement, however, is more astebishing than the work itself. ‘This
ore Was milled as raised, and the
ballion production of the Consolidated -Vi.ginia that month stands a
ly believe, never be equaled. The
yield ot the mine for the month was
over $3,500,000--a record which it is
