by Hon. 8. Wells Williams, L, L. D., and
Prof, Isaac Hall, L. L. B. Ph. D., who are
eminent scholars and noted travelers,
You know religion, in some form, is inter.
woven in the entire fabric of human histoPA So the author begins with “The World’s
First Worship,” when there was but one
sia od who worshipped but one God.
They show how the DirreaEnt nations
GREW UP, became scattered over the earth,
and different in LANGUAGE, CUSTOMS and religion. ‘They tell us of the Sacred and Heathen Traditions of all these different nations, Then with the great first facta of history placed before us, they take us to

hidden history,.and trace the errors of man
there ; and so tell of the Chaldeans; of; he
“Jews ;” “Japan;” ot “The Dark Conti
nent ;” of “‘The aborigines of America’;” of
the Islands of the Sea ; and of all the different nations, and their great men; and of
thejr cities, famous buildings, books, fireside tales, holidays, festivals, etc,
Their plan has been to take the nations as
they existed in their beginning, follow them
in their growths, and go present to usa com—_ picture of then, as they are a

Iron Production at Hotaling.
ene
Union: The iron furnace at Hotsling is turning out twenty-four
tons of superior pig metal daily,
The company has also on hand and
stored 400,000 bushels of charcoal,
that will furnish a supply until next
season. On this ‘account the burning of coal ig measurably suspended
for the season, and the chopping of
wood which has been an active industry in the lower part of. this
township during the past. summer
hae about concluded. A large
amount of wood has been cut the
present year and converted into
charcoal, which has been the means
of clearing up much land that will
be made available hereafter for
farming and grazing purposes. This
process of clearing has been ing on
extensively since the establishment
of the iron furnace, and has been
the means of opening upa large body
of landon both sides of Bear river,
and giving it an enhanced valuation,
ae itis found that much of this
land since being cleared is producing
fine. crops of natural grasses where
none grew before. It also prepares
the way for many future vineyards,
as the soil and loeation is admirably
adapted to such,

Republican State Platform.
The following is the Platform adopted
the Republican State Convention:
Resolved, That the Republicans of the
State of California, in Convention assembled,
indorse and reaffirm the National platform
of the Republican party, adopted at its Convention, recently held in Chicago, and we
congratulate the country upon the nomination of Blaine and Logan, tho true representatives of the American policy.of progress
and unity.
Resolved, That we de clare tha t pros
perity of labor and the interest of capital
require the maintenance by the National
Government of the American system of
tariff for protection. Under this policy
which has been constantly supported by
the Republican party since its foundation,
our varied industries have been fostered
anu extended, our laboring classes have enjoyed better wages than in any other part of
the world, and. the whole country hag
achieved unparalleled prosperity. We de~
nounce the free trade policy which the Democratic party has advocated since. 1840 ag
dangerous to the well-being of American
labor, We arraign the Democratic party of
California for supporting the National
Democratic party, which stands upon a platform that declares, in effect, for the freetrade dovtrine of tariff for revenue only, as
admitted by prominent members of the committee that framed the plank, We insist
that the success of the British policy would
destroy the growing indvstries of our commonwealth, especially the grape, raisin, wool
and ufacturing interests, and would reduce the wages of our workingmen to the
starvation point,
Resolved, That we ask and demand that
the industry of the manufacture of the raisin
shall be protected by @ protective duty, and
resolved that we demand the restoration of
the tariff on wool as fixed by the law of 1867
Resolved, That we are in favor of the
adoption of the proposed amendment to
Section 7 of Article 9 of the Constitution of
this State, authorizing the furnishing of
free text-books for use in the common
schools throughout the State,
Resolved, what’ the Republican paity of
California hasa consistent record in ite unswerving devotion to the interests of the
People in opposition to all monopolies,
Inrat—We declare that railroad corporations
being organized for a public use, all unjust
discrimination as between persons and
places is in direct violation of the Constitution of this State, and should be prohibited.
Second-We declare that the charges for
