st Spare thérrees, ;
It issaid that George P. Morris’
was preceded over a thousand years
by oa Chinese poem embodying the
same thought. This may. serve, at
least, to show the possible universalicy of a desire to preserve certain
varieties of trees for cert rin rensons,
marks on tue desirability of protet
ing from watton de-traction tie
magnificent forests, which, io living;
bestitify and adorn our mountiins
and fovt hills, From all sides comes
the same-testimony—thut there is
everywhere observable a most inexeusabls carelessness (to use uo)
‘harsher term) in regard t) cctting
down tie timber. Large, handsome
¢rees are felled, and if vot foand to
suit to aviecty the needs of the destroyer, the whole mass of wood is
abatidow d and a mcr» de.i able tree
selected, Thus, thousunds and
thousunds of decaying gisutsof the
forests sirew our mouutiin sides,
and what with demands for fuel,
buildivg tmaterial and «tier necessary uses, the heaven-appointsd condensers of the rain-cloads are fust
vanishing from view, touch to our
detriment as » Stuts, and will coutinue to do #0 unless some mensures
are taken to prevent their needless
destruction, There is one brigit

about us where ouce stood stalwart
forest trees, tiere is now a vigorous
growth of young forest pines, cedars
and firs, which will sovn—attiin a
hight s.fficieat to compensate for
the demolishment_ of. the original
forests. But notwituctanding all
this, it-is sad to see, even in régard
to these young growths, evidences
of wanton destruction. Inu a stroll
just outside of our own city, one
may see tree after trea hacked, up.
' parently just for the ‘fan of tie
thing;’’ sometimes, .perhups, wit
the Washingtonian idea of seeing
how a vew butchet can cut. If this
goes on, and these trees are cut
down, even for fuel, before they can
bear cones, it is possible that the
next geferation may reside on tye . quite a sensation, the Kitle ones enbarrenent of hills, unless there should
be a spirited revival on the subject
of tree-planting, and, by the way,
tuis is a matter which should engage tire most serious thought of our
people, Arboriculture is oue of the
most remunerative pursaits, bat, uvhappily for us, as Oulifornians, it is
not as speedy in itsreturns as some
ether kinds of business. Yet, even
in regard to this, there is not the delay which some might imagine. Euealyptue or Australian gum trees,
suitable for plauts, can be obtained
for five cents apiece, and rerbaps
fess. Inu seven or eight years they
will. be woith at least one dollar each,
Trees which Gen, Strutton, of Alumeda county, planted ten or fifteen
yeare ago, are now being cut for telegraph poles and railroad ties, and
the wood.ig of great value for various
purposes, besides being well adapted
for fuel. A very intelligent writer
on.this subject, in alluding to the
profit uf tree-planting, says:
“The profit of timber plantations
must become greater euch year, as
the forests of the country are consumed. l'or ordinary fuel alone, the
two cords per acre, which may be yearly obtained, would be a constant
revenue of $10 in many portions of
the country, ($15 in rome purts
of the State) and when good timber
tees Are raised, which may be employed in the’ innumerabie manufactories of tools and machinery, for
eooperage, ships, buildings, carriuges
aud cabinet work, the annual revenue would be severul times greater.”’
He also estimates that if the planting of timber belts was universally
adopted taroughout the” country,
they would possess a money value of
$800,000,000, though occupying only
a twenty-fifth patof the improved

Some weeks ago we were shown a
few spec.mens of quuitz from tae
wuek talked of Meadow Lake District, says the Dutch Flat Forum.
‘The specimens show free gold quite
liberally, and judg ng from the appearances, there is a fortuue awaitiug the man who shall di<cover a reliable process by which to save the
gold. Base metals exist to such an
eXteutin thé’ore that as yet no one
has been found whe could work the
vre successfully in large quantities,
We are infurmied thut a gentlemun
who lives at Meadow Lake, and who
is largely icterested in mines there,
hi:s discovere1 a process which he
believes willbe entirely succeasful.
He has yet ouly tried it on small
batches, bui is confident tht it will
work equally as well on a large scale.
He is-now trying to induce capital to
give it a trisl, and if it should
prove a success, we may expect reports of big strikes iu this long
neglected mining district.
